About the Role
The University of Cape Town Lung Institute (Pty) Ltd is seeking a Community Health Worker to join our team in Masiphumalele. This 12-month Fixed Term Contract position will require you to work closely with patients, provide education and support, and assist with data collection and administrative duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Recruitment, screening and consenting of study participants (includes adult and children) in the community
- Retention and follow-up of study participants (to attend appointments)
- Assist participants in maintaining asthma diaries to track symptoms and triggers
- Guide participants in self-monitoring techniques and provide education on maintaining health records
- Do home visits to participants
- Keep Research Nurse informed of participants and report any irregularities
- Data Collection and administrative duties – questionnaires, data entry and verification
- Maintain database of participant information and complete participant progress reports as required
- Provide education and support to participants during the screening process
- Educate participants on the studies
- Drive to destinations to drop off and/or collect participants and/or documents as instructed by line manager
- Ensure correct handling and transport of specimens to the relevant laboratories.
- Set up and manage air quality monitors (personal and household) and community-based spore trap
Requirements
- Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate or Equivalent
- Experience in a clinic / health care environment, working with both adult and paediatric patients
- Sound knowledge of recruiting area (Masiphumalele)
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Fluent in English and another South African Language
- Valid Driver’s License (advantageous)
- Computer Literacy (MS Office, Internet and electronic Data Management Systems advantageous)
