About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior RPG Developer to join our team in Midrand, South Africa. As a key member of our application software development team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining applications using RPG (RPG III / RPG IV / ILE RPG / Free Format RPG). You will work closely with senior colleagues to develop complex applications, identify areas for improvement, and implement enhancements to meet customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain applications using RPG (RPG III / RPG IV / ILE RPG / Free Format RPG)
- Develop the most complex existing and new applications by analysing and identifying areas for modification and improvement.
- Develop new applications to meet customer requirements. Improvement / Innovation: Identify shortcomings in existing business practices, then suggest and implement improvements while developing and delivering projects or a work stream within the organisation’s change management program.
- Applications Software Maintenance: Monitor, identify, and correct more complex software defects to maintain fully functioning applications software.
- Analyze existing systems and recommend enhancements or modernization strategies
- Integrate RPG applications with modern technologies (APIs, web services, SQL databases)
- Collaborate with business analysts, QA teams, and stakeholders to gather and refine requirements
- Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve production issues efficiently
- Mentor junior developers and contribute to best practices and coding standards
- Participate in system architecture discussions and long-term technical planning
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in RPG development on IBM i / AS400
- Grade 12/ SAQA Accredited Equivalent (Essential); A recognised software development certification/degree/diploma (Essential)
- Strong proficiency in RPGLE, CLLE, DB2 for i, and embedded SQL
- Experience with modern RPG (Free Format) and legacy codebases
- Solid understanding of system integration, APIs, and web services
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
