About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior RPG Developer to join our team in Midrand, South Africa. As a key member of our application software development team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining applications using RPG (RPG III / RPG IV / ILE RPG / Free Format RPG). You will work closely with senior colleagues to develop complex applications, identify areas for improvement, and implement enhancements to meet customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain applications using RPG (RPG III / RPG IV / ILE RPG / Free Format RPG)
Develop the most complex existing and new applications by analysing and identifying areas for modification and improvement.
Develop new applications to meet customer requirements. Improvement / Innovation: Identify shortcomings in existing business practices, then suggest and implement improvements while developing and delivering projects or a work stream within the organisation’s change management program.
Applications Software Maintenance: Monitor, identify, and correct more complex software defects to maintain fully functioning applications software.
Analyze existing systems and recommend enhancements or modernization strategies
Integrate RPG applications with modern technologies (APIs, web services, SQL databases)
Collaborate with business analysts, QA teams, and stakeholders to gather and refine requirements
Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve production issues efficiently
Mentor junior developers and contribute to best practices and coding standards
Participate in system architecture discussions and long-term technical planning

Requirements

5+ years of hands-on experience in RPG development on IBM i / AS400
Grade 12/ SAQA Accredited Equivalent (Essential); A recognised software development certification/degree/diploma (Essential)
Strong proficiency in RPGLE, CLLE, DB2 for i, and embedded SQL
Experience with modern RPG (Free Format) and legacy codebases
Solid understanding of system integration, APIs, and web services
Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git)
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
