About the Role

AJ Personnel is seeking a highly skilled Product Design Specialist to join their team in Gauteng. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical design, draughting, or equivalent practical experience, and will be responsible for creating detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings for HVAC/R products.

Key Responsibilities

• Create detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings for HVAC/R products
• Produce accurate and complete fabrication drawings including tolerances, materials, and finishes
• Generate and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs)
• Ensure all designs are optimized for manufacturability and ease of assembly
• Reduce rework by improving drawing clarity and design accuracy
• Optimize material usage and minimize waste (offcuts)
• Simplify designs to reduce assembly time and production complexity
• Align designs with available tooling, machinery, and workshop capabilities
• Ensure drawings are complete, correct, and ready before release to production
• Maintain revision control and proper documentation standards
• Support timely product release to meet production schedules
• Work closely with production teams to resolve design-related issues
• Assist in identifying root causes of manufacturing errors linked to design
• Implement design improvements based on production feedback
• Support prototype builds to validate design intent
• Ensure designs meet practical and functional requirements
• Refine drawings based on prototype and production feedback
• Ensure designs comply with company standards and relevant regulations
• Maintain structured and organized design documentation
• Collaborate with engineering, production, and procurement teams
• Contribute to improving internal design standards and best practices
• Continuously build product and system knowledge (including HVAC/R fundamentals)

Requirements

• Technical qualification in Mechanical Design, Draughting, or equivalent practical experience
• Minimum 3–7 years’ experience in a design/draughting or product engineering role
• Strong 3D CAD design capability (sheet metal, assemblies, manufacturing drawings)
• High-level understanding of structural design and sheet metal fabrication processes
• Experience producing production-ready drawings (BOMs, tolerances, fabrication details)
• Practical understanding of manufacturing constraints and workshop processes
• Refrigeration/HVAC knowledge advantageous but not required (to be developed in-role)
• Proficiency in CAD platforms (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor or similar)

Qualifications

• Formal engineering degree (not mandatory)
