About the Role The Dental Assistant provides comprehensive clinical and administrative support to dentists and specialists across general and specialised dentistry. This includes chairside assistance, maintaining high clinical standards, ensuring exceptional patient experiences, and supporting specialised procedures such as orthodontic treatments, endodontics, oral surgery, implantology, periodontics, and aesthetic dentistry. The role requires advanced knowledge, precision, and strict adherence to HPCSA and DOH standards. Responsibilities A. Clinical & Chairside Assistance (General & Specialised Dentistry) Assist with restorative procedures, extractions, fillings, crowns, bridges, and routine check-ups Prepare and handle dental materials such as composites, impression materials, cements, and etchants. Capture X-rays and digital imaging under appropriate supervision and training. Orthodontics Assist with bonding and debonding procedures. Prepare and manage orthodontic instruments. Place and remove ligatures, archwires, bands, and separators under supervision. Support scanning, impressions, and aligner processes. Educate patients on appliance care. Endodontics Prepare operatory for endodontic treatment using correct rubber dam techniques. Assist with canal preparation, irrigation protocols, and obturation. Maintain the sterility and organisation of endodontic files and rotary instruments. Support digital root canal measurements and documentation. Oral Surgery & Implantology Prepare surgical trays, suturing kits, implant motors, and sterile fields. Assist during minor oral surgeries including extractions, biopsies, and bone grafting. Support implant placement procedures including prosthetic components. Monitor pre- and postoperative patient comfort. Periodontics Assist with periodontal probing, scaling & root planing setups. Manage instruments for flap surgeries and laser periodontal procedures. Prepare medicaments for placement. Cosmetic Dentistry Assist with veneers, whitening procedures, and digital scans. Manage shade-taking processes. Support before-and-after photography and documentation. B. Infection Control & Sterilisation Maintain strict infection control protocols across all treatment rooms. Sterilise instruments including surgical kits, implant systems, and endodontic files. Ensure proper maintenance of equipment such as autoclaves and ultrasonic cleaners. Handle clinical waste and sharps in compliance with regulations. C. Patient Care & Customer Service Prepare, guide, and comfort patients before and during specialised procedures. Support anxious patients with empathy and reassurance. Provide detailed postoperative guidance. Uphold premium patient communication standards. D. Administrative & Clinical Coordination Support scheduling for specialised procedures. Capture detailed notes and treatment codes. Manage stock levels for speciality materials. Coordinate lab work for crowns, veneers, aligners, and retainers. E. Compliance & Professional Conduct Follow HPCSA and practice protocols. Uphold POPIA requirements regarding patient data. Maintain professional conduct at all times. Demonstrate reliability, accuracy, and commitment to excellence. Performance Indications (KPIs) Readiness and accuracy for specialised procedures. Infection control and sterilisation compliance. Patient satisfaction and comfort levels. Instrument and stock management efficiency. Clinical documentation accuracy. Teamwork and support across specialists. Candidate Requirements Experience, Qualifications, and Skills HPCSA-registered Dental Assistant qualification. 5 years practical experience; specialised experience advantageous. Knowledge of specialised dental procedures and equipment. Strong communication and ability to work under pressure. Fluent in Afrikaans and English Personal Attributes Detail-oriented and organised. Professional, empathetic, and patient-focused. Excellent hygiene and presentation. Integrity, confidentiality, and commitment to learning.
