Role Overview

Our client, a legal insurer, is looking for a detail-oriented and driven Litigation Claims Consultant to join their Criminal Law Department in Cape Town.

This role operates within a legal insurance environment, not a traditional law firm. Employees do not attend court. Instead, the role functions within a call centre-based legal services environment, where communication with policyholders and attorneys takes place primarily via telephonic and email correspondence.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing litigation claims, managing criminal litigation matters, coordinating with panel attorneys, and ensuring compliance with internal policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend to Emergency Bail Line queues and provide timely support.
  • Register new cases on internal systems and verify policy holder payment histories.
  • Manage, assess, and administer criminal litigation claims in line with internal policies.
  • Work closely with Legal Managers and the Head of Department on claim decisions.
  • Draft legal opinions, research notes, letters, representations, and appeals.
  • Maintain accurate and compliant legal case files with detailed notes.
  • Provide monthly updates and ongoing communication to policy holders.
  • Explain legal processes and policy exclusions clearly to manage expectations.
  • Conduct legal research to remain current with relevant legislation.
  • Follow management instructions and maintain strong working relationships with support staff.
  • Manage litigation benefits and allocated budgets for policy holders.
  • Process panel attorney invoices and oversee legal correspondence.
  • Assess legal merits of matters for litigation advice and cover qualification.
  • Arrange referrals to accredited panel attorneys when required.
  • Apply exclusion procedures in accordance with policy and legal guidelines.
  • Manage callbacks and communications received via legal platforms and internal systems.

Minimum Requirements

  • LLB Degree (essential).
  • Minimum 2+ years post-articles experience, preferably in criminal or litigation-related matters.
  • Ability to speak, write, and understand two official African languages, of which English or Afrikaans should be one
  • Strong knowledge of litigation processes and legal administration.
  • Excellent legal drafting and research skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and file management capability.
  • Fully computer literate.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
