About the Role
Staff Solutions is seeking an experienced SHERQ Officer to implement and maintain SHERQ management systems across assigned depots in the Eastern Cape region. The ideal candidate will provide guidance and support to appointed Section 16(2) and 8(2) responsible persons, conduct regular site inspections, and ensure legal and operational compliance.
Key Responsibilities

- Provide guidance and support to appointed Section 16(2) and 8(2) responsible persons to ensure legal and operational compliance.
- Conduct regular site inspections and address unsafe acts or conditions.
- Plan, conduct and coordinate internal and external SHERQ audits.
- Audit driver, vehicle and safety files against legislative and company requirements.
- Prepare sites, documentation and employees for audits and inspections.
- Communicate audit findings, implement corrective actions and track closure of non-conformances.
- Assist with drafting, reviewing and updating SHERQ policies, procedures, risk assessments and safe operating procedures.
- Ensure documentation is updated following incidents, audits or operational changes.
- Investigate incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions and identify root causes.
- Compile and submit investigation reports for approval.
- Assist management with corrective actions and the communication of lessons learnt.
- Conduct employee inductions, toolbox talks and internal safety training.
- Coordinate external training for drivers and other staff.
- Promote a strong safety culture through engagement with employees and contractors.
- Facilitate safety committee meetings and address safety concerns across depots.
- Monitor environmental initiatives aimed at protecting employee health and the environment.
- Implement preventative measures in line with environmental assessments and recommendations.
- Represent the company during Department of Labour inspections.
- Develop project-specific health and safety specifications and baseline risk assessments for contractors.
- Review and approve contractor safety files.
- Conduct contractor audits and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Monitor and manage SHERQ key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Compile compliance reports for professional and regulatory bodies, including RTMS.
- Identify trends in non-compliance and implement corrective measures.
Minimum Requirements
### Qualifications
- National Diploma or Degree in Safety Management, Environmental Management, Occupational Health or a related field.
- NEBOSH qualification or equivalent (advantageous).
- Valid Fall Protection Planner registration (advantageous).
- Registration or eligibility for registration with a recognised professional body (e.g. SACPCMP or SAIOHS) would be advantageous.
### Experience
- 2–5 years’ experience in a SHERQ or HSE role.
- Experience within industrial, logistics, manufacturing, gas or fuel environments preferred.
- Proven experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, audits and inspections.
- Exposure to ISO management systems (ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001).
- Experience delivering safety training and toolbox talks.
### Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of South African SHERQ legislation, including the OHS Act, Environmental legislation, COID Act and applicable SANS standards.
- Knowledge of hazard identification, risk control and emergency preparedness.
- Experience with contractor management and permit-to-work systems.
- Strong reporting, documentation and record-keeping skills.
