Job Description
A leading food distribution and production company is looking for a junior Food Safety & Quality Assurance Officer with strong experience in establishing and implementing food safety management systems to join their team in Johannesburg. This is an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented professional to ensure the safety and quality of products by maintaining high hygiene standards, conducting inspections, and ensuring strict compliance with regulations such as R638, R146, and SANS 241. Responsibilities:
- Establish, implement, and maintain the Food Safety Management System (FSSC 22000, HACCP, and GMP) to ensure all legal and internal standards are met.
- Stay updated on legislation (R638, R146, SANS 241) and conduct regular plant walk-abouts and inspections to ensure production compliance.
- Manage the supplier program by conducting food fraud/defense risk assessments and performing audits on high-risk suppliers.
- Formulate and coordinate annual internal food safety training programs and promote a strong food safety culture for all operational staff and new hires.
- Oversee allergen control, manage integrated pest management programs, and coordinate Management of Change (MoC) procedures on-site.
- Investigate food safety incidents, ensure traceability, and initiate corrective actions or recall processes when defects are identified.
- Liaise with external auditors and regulatory bodies while ensuring all food safety paperwork is controlled and accessible for audits.
Requirements:
- B-Tech Degree in Food Technology or Biotechnology.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in establishing and implementing food safety management systems.
- In-depth knowledge of applicable legislation such as R638, R146, and SANS 241.
- Comprehensive understanding of FSSC 22000, HACCP, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
- Proficiency in conducting hazard analysis risk assessments and root cause analysis investigations.
- Experience in process and procedure formulation and internal auditing.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage and collaborate with stakeholders.
- Proven ability to handle conflict, lead teams, and cope with pressure and setbacks.
- Attentive to detail with strong moral principles and a results-oriented mindset.
