PBT Group is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to join our clients dynamic data team. The successful candidate will work closely with senior stakeholders to design, develop, and maintain robust data pipelines and cloud-based solutions.

This role requires a strong understanding of data engineering principles, data lake management, and cloud technologies (preferably GCP, but Azure or AWS experience will also be considered).

Key Skills & Experience

• 48 years experience in Data Engineering.
• Strong SQL skills and experience with data pipeline development.
• Hands-on experience with GCP (BigQuery, Dataplex) or equivalent cloud platforms (Azure / AWS).
• Experience managing Data Lakes, messaging queues, and pub/sub models.
• Proven ability to optimise, maintain, and scale cloud-based data environments.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Advantageous

• Exposure to data orchestration tools and real-time data streaming.
• Experience with ETL design and data modelling best practices.
• Familiarity with Python or other scripting languages.

Additional Information

• The role can be based in either Cape Town or Johannesburg.
• Candidates with strong Azure experience are encouraged to apply skills are easily transferable to GCP.
• Immediate availability will be advantageous.

What Youll Do

• Design, develop, and maintain high-performance data pipelines using ADF and Databricks.

• Transform and integrate data from diverse sources to enable advanced analytics and reporting.

• Optimise workflows for scalability, performance, and cost-effectiveness in Azure.

• Collaborate with analysts, data scientists, and business teams to deliver clean, reliable, and governed data.

• Monitor and improve data quality, security, and compliance across platforms.

• Contribute to DevOps practices, code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.

What Were Looking For

• 3+ years experience as a Data Engineer (or similar).

• Proven expertise in Azure Data Factory and Databricks (Spark, Python, SQL).

• Strong background in ETL/ELT pipelines within cloud-based architectures.

• Proficiency in SQL and experience with both structured and unstructured data.

• Familiarity with Azure Synapse, Data Lake, and version control (Git).

• Solid understanding of data governance and security best practices.

Bonus Skills (Nice to Have)

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, Azure DevOps).

• Exposure to real-time data processing or machine learning pipelines.
