About the Role
We are seeking a knowledgeable and accomplished Chilled & Frozen Food Buyer to join our Procurement team at our Durban offices. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for procuring meat for export, ensuring compliance with South African and International regulations, and building strategic relationships with suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop the purchasing of both fresh and frozen meat for exportation.
- Provide support to the Senior Meat buyer.
- Build strategic relationships with new and existing suppliers.
- Negotiate market support from suppliers.
- Manage and negotiate costs throughout the value chain from livestock to cuts required by clients for their markets.
- Monitor the execution of orders with suppliers and Export Coordinators, ensuring all protocols are adhered to.
- Inspection and loading, requiring physical presence.
- Supplier liaison, negotiation, market report feedback to suppliers.
- Work with PPECB inspectors and the veterinary department to obtain correct documentation for shipments.
- Negotiate pricing and payment terms with suppliers.
- Source new suppliers where required and develop relationships with existing clients.
- Problem solving and claim resolution.
- Settle claims with suppliers when they arise.
- Keep track of all meat orders for export.
- Place all orders with various meat suppliers.
- Ensure correct processes are always being adhered to.
Requirements
- Exceptional good meat knowledge, including grades and cuts of pork, beef, chicken, lamb, and fish.
- Good understanding/experience of the meat export process.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a similar capacity.
- Current relationship with meat suppliers.
- Understanding and/or experience of import regulations for meat in South Africa (a bonus).
