Company Overview

A leading steel manufacturing plant in the Cape Town region is seeking an experienced GMR 2 Mechanical Maintenance Leader. The company operates in a heavy industrial steel production environment and requires a highly skilled leader with deep mechanical engineering and plant-maintenance experience.

Role Purpose

The GMR 2 Mechanical Maintenance Leader will drive mechanical maintenance operations across the plant. This senior role requires strong leadership, extensive experience in heavy industry, and a proven ability to ensure maximum reliability and uptime of mechanical assets within a steel manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop and manage the mechanical maintenance team to meet production and plant-reliability targets.
  • Oversee and implement preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance programmes.
  • Plan and coordinate maintenance schedules to minimise downtime and maximize output.
  • Conduct and supervise inspections, RCAs (root-cause analysis) and corrective maintenance actions.
  • Manage maintenance budgets, spare-parts inventory and contractors.
  • Ensure full compliance with HSE regulations, LOTO procedures and safe-working standards.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping and 5S standards in mechanical workshops.
  • Prepare and present maintenance performance reports to management.
  • Support major shutdowns, overhauls and mechanical project upgrades.
  • Collaborate closely with operations, engineering, electrical maintenance and production teams.

Candidate Requirements

  • Mechanical Engineering background (Diploma/Degree) OR extensive mechanical trade experience with strong engineering competency.
  • 2025 years proven experience in hard-core mechanical maintenance within steel plants or heavy-industry environments.
  • Currently in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical systems (gearboxes, drives, hydraulics, pneumatics, conveyors, cranes, rollers, etc.).
  • Experience in maintenance planning, scheduling, predictive maintenance and RCAs.
  • Strong HSE knowledge LOTO, permit-to-work, mechanical safety.
  • CMMS/SAP experience advantageous.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, leadership ability and decision-making under pressure.
