About the Role
The Health, Safety & Environmental Officer is a critical role that ensures compliance with health, safety, and environmental legislation, standards, and company policies within our gold processing plant. The successful candidate will proactively identify risks, implement controls, and foster a culture of safety and sustainability across all operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure adherence to national mining, occupational health, and environmental regulations.
- Support ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 9001 compliance programs.
- Maintain and update HSE policies, procedures, and risk registers.
- Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments for plant operations.
- Develop and monitor mitigation measures to reduce residual risk.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and environmental breaches, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
- Deliver induction and refresher training on HSE practices.
- Promote employee awareness of safe work practices, emergency preparedness, and environmental stewardship.
- Facilitate toolbox talks and safety campaigns.
- Deliver Radiation awareness training.
- Conduct routine inspections, audits, and permit-to-work verifications.
- Monitor environmental KPIs (waste, emissions, water usage, tailings management).
- Prepare monthly HSE performance reports and present findings to management.
- Support the development and testing of emergency response plans.
- Coordinate drills for fire, chemical spills, and evacuation scenarios.
- Liaise with external emergency services when required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field.
- Professional certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, SAMTRAC, ISO Lead Auditor) preferred.
- Minimum 5 years experience in HSE within mining or heavy industry.
- Strong knowledge of mining legislation, environmental management, and risk assessment methodologies.
- Experience in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
