Pietermaritzburg: Maintenance Technician

Maintenance Technician Reporting to: Operations Seniority Level: Mid-Career (2 – 4 yrs exp) Type: Temp We are seeking a skilled and hands-on Maintenance Technician to ensure reliable operation of all site equipment, utilities and infrastructure through effective repairs, breakdown response and preventative maintenance. Key Responsibilities Perform repairs and maintenance on: Mechanical equipment Electrical systems Services / utilities Buildings and site supplies Restore equipment after breakdowns and ensure safe, quality-compliant recovery Execute and support preventative planned maintenance to reduce failures and deterioration Develop and follow standard maintenance procedures aligned to safety and quality Identify critical spares and support spares planning Conduct breakdown analysis and root cause investigations Implement improvements to reduce breakdown frequency and costs (MTTR / MTBF) Maintain job cards, weekly sign-offs and accurate maintenance records Coordinate contractors, suppliers and subcontractors when required Key Performance Areas Preventative planned maintenance compliance Breakdown cost and breakdown reduction Critical spares list management Root cause analysis and corrective actions Continuous improvement using LUTI (Learn Use Teach Inspect) Compliance Requirements Ensure equipment meets legal, regulated and company standards Maintain strict compliance with Food Safety (FSSC) and hygiene requirements Follow all Health & Safety policies and participate in ongoing risk assessments Minimum Requirements Grade 12 Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills Knowledge of food safety standards and hygiene regulations Experience in maintaining and repairing production machinery Ability to work independently, under pressure and in a fast-paced environment Reliable, punctual, committed and a strong team player Willingness to learn and take on additional reasonable tasks when required Working Conditions Food manufacturing environment (noisy, hygiene-controlled, safety-critical) Shift work may apply, including weekends and nights Physically demanding role (standing, lifting, manual repairs)
