Job Summary

Job Purpose: To manage and enforce health and safety practices during the equipment installation and commissioning phase of the new manufacturing facility. The Safety Officer will ensure that all contractors, employees, and site activities comply with occupational health and safety legislation, reducing risk and supporting a safe working environment as the facility prepares for operational launch. Key Responsibilities: • Develop and implement site-specific health and safety plans for the installation and commissioning phase. • Conduct site safety inductions for contractors, vendors, and staff entering the facility. • Monitor all on-site activities to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and project-specific safety protocols. • Conduct routine site inspections and audits, identifying hazards and ensuring immediate corrective action is taken. • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and enforce safety compliance among all personnel. • Review contractors’ safety documentation, method statements, and risk assessments • Lead incident investigations, maintain safety logs, and report findings with recommended corrective actions. • Liaise with contractors, equipment suppliers, and the project management team to plan and coordinate safe work practices. • Participate in commissioning safety protocols and equipment testing. • Ensure emergency response plans are in place, communicated, and tested on-site. • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training. • Prepare for seamless handover of safety systems and procedures from the project phase to full plant operations. Qualifications & Experience: • National Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or related field. • Recognised health and safety certification (e.g. NEBOSH, SAMTRAC, NOSA). • Minimum 3 years’ experience in safety roles on construction, industrial installation, or commissioning projects. • Strong knowledge of relevant OHS legislation, particularly in industrial and construction settings. • Experience with contractor management, safe work permits, and site mobilisation. • Familiarity with construction safety practices, crane lifts, working at heights, confined spaces, and electrical commissioning safety. Key Skills & Competencies: • Proactive approach to risk management and problem-solving. • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage contractors and cross functional teams. • Ability to influence and enforce safety compliance on an active site. • High attention to detail and report-writing ability. • Competency with Microsoft Office and digital safety management tools.

Job Summary

Key Performance Areas Business Protection – Monitor and enforce compliance with regulatory, ISO, and legal requirements across all sites. – Ensure the implementation of HSE (Health, Safety & Environmental) policies, procedures, standards, and systems on each shift. – Support the achievement of annual targets set by the Compliance Section KPIs. – Implement audits, checks, and inspections to ensure compliance with OHS Act deliverables on a regular basis (weekly/monthly). – Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., OSH Act, ISO, Environmental, Noise & Energy) in the workplace. – Maintain legal and regulatory compliance by sending samples, reports, and inspections to relevant authorities (e.g., water samples, meter readings). Health & Safety Management – Provide SHEE (Safety, Health, Environment, and Environment) consulting services and advice to the manufacturing plant. – Participate in investigations and reporting of incidents in the workplace, and devise and implement preventative strategies. – Conduct regular HIRA (Hazard Identification & Risk Assessments), environmental assessments, and update SWPs and SOPs. – Assist with annual SHEE inductions for all employees and provide incidental training throughout the year. – Develop and participate in new safety programs to continuously improve SHEE standards. – Lead by example in maintaining compliance with all safety regulations and create safety bulletins, toolbox talks, etc., to raise awareness. – Implement and maintain health and safety standards to reduce the likelihood of incidents. – Perform regular inspections of equipment (e.g., ladders, racks, forklifts, PPE, machinery) and address safety concerns. – Manage contractor Health and Safety file readiness and drive compliance. – Issue work permits to staff and contractors as necessary. Environmental Management – Ensure implementation of the Environmental Management System in compliance with legislation and ISO standards. – Conduct monthly environmental assessments and work with relevant managers to address any findings and implement improvements. – Develop and maintain an audit matrix with scheduled internal audits, report on findings, and monitor improvements. – Investigate incidents, accidents, and injuries, and attend relevant training as required. Energy Management – Support the energy efficiency plan by driving initiatives to reduce energy consumption. – Promote energy-saving awareness by implementing schedules for turning off unused equipment, investing in energy-efficient solutions, and fixing air leaks. – Install energy-saving equipment such as light sensors and lamps. Risk Management – Ensure compliance with current legislation, standards, and legal requirements by validating risk assessments during HSE inspections. – Review and ensure risk assessments are completed for all contractor jobs prior to commencement of work. – Conduct job hazard identification and risk assessments (HIRA), and improve processes to mitigate hazards. – Identify risks in tasks, score hazards, and implement necessary controls to reduce significant risks. People Management – Support people management initiatives to ensure timely access to information, document storage, and meeting SHEEQ deadlines. – Coordinate activities to ensure compliance with ISO standards and SharePoint management for documentation. – Track the performance of all SHEEQ-related targets and deadlines. – Manage the consolidated HSE Plant training plan, ensuring proper execution and documentation. – Attend daily production QSB meetings to provide SHEE-related information and participate in strategic team meetings. – Assist with daily administration functions and ensure continuous improvement in SHE culture. – Perform any other duties as required by the SHEEQ Manager or Duty Manager. Job Specifications QUALIFICATIONS Minimum: – Grade 12 Certificate – National Diploma in Safety Management (preferred) or equivalent – SAMTRAC or similar safety qualification – Knowledge of OHS Act, ISO standards, Environmental, Noise & Energy regulations Advantageous: – Tertiary studies in SHE (Safety, Health, Environmental) Management or equivalent – Additional training or work experience in OHS Act, ISO, Environmental, and Energy Management EXPERIENCE Minimum: – Minimum of 3 years of work experience in a manufacturing or related field. Advantageous: – Previous experience in a manufacturing facility, especially in an environment similar to the client’s operations.
