About the Role

The Foreman (Earthworks) position is a critical role in our construction team, responsible for managing and overseeing the execution of earthworks projects. The ideal candidate will possess excellent leadership skills, sound knowledge of construction processes, and experience in staff management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading and managing one or more construction teams by allocating tasks to team leaders, skilled workers, and general labourers.
  • Coordinating and ensuring safe transportation of all labour to and from the workplace.
  • Ensuring all team members understand their assigned tasks and providing on-site guidance or demonstrations where required.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment by enforcing the use of prescribed personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with all safety procedures and instructions.
  • Complete and submit daily reports, timesheets, tally sheets, delivery notes, and all required documentation accurately and timeously.
  • Take responsibility for the care, use, and safekeeping of small tools and minor plant, ensuring these are returned at the end of each working day.
  • Maintain discipline, acceptable timekeeping, and workforce conduct in line with company standards.
  • Apply and adhere to the approved Industrial Relations policies at all times.
  • Ensure that the workforce has the correct and sufficient materials for daily operations, and arrange additional materials when necessary.
  • Prevent material wastage and ensure that surplus materials are returned to stores.
  • Remain actively present on-site, supervising multiple gangs where applicable, and monitor productivity and performance to meet required standards.
  • Conduct quality control checks, including alignment, levels, density, and overall workmanship.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to understudies, gang leaders, and equipment operators when required.
  • Ensure full awareness and achievement of prescribed production rates for all activities under your control.
  • Oversee plant and machinery to ensure proper maintenance by the Plant Company, adequate refuelling, safe operation, and adherence to start-up and shut-down procedures.
  • Ensure that all personnel and plant are on-site at designated start times and remain until scheduled stopping times.
  • Attend daily planning and cost meetings as required.
  • Escalate concerns or request assistance from senior management when necessary.

Requirements

  • Matric (Grade 12) with Mathematics and/or an NQF Level 4 qualification will be advantageous.
  • A minimum of five (5) years relevant experience within a construction environment.
  • Sound knowledge of construction processes and various construction trades.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
  • Competence in setting out and leveling.
  • Working knowledge of construction materials, plant, and equipment.
