About the Role
Network Finance is seeking a highly skilled Substation Engineer to join our team in Johannesburg North. As a key member of our electrical engineering department, you will be responsible for designing and reviewing substation layouts, overseeing construction, installation, testing, and commissioning, as well as ensuring compliance with IEC, IEEE, and utility standards. With your expertise in primary and secondary substation systems, you will play a critical role in delivering successful projects on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and review primary and secondary substation layouts and drawings
- Perform equipment sizing and selection (transformers, switchgear, protection systems)
- Develop technical specifications, scopes of work, and bill of quantities
- Oversee substation construction, installation, testing, and commissioning
- Conduct site inspections and ensure compliance with IEC, IEEE, and utility standards
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Support protection, control, and SCADA integration where required
- Ensure adherence to safety, quality, and project timelines
Requirements
- BEng / BSc in Electrical Engineering
- 3–8+ years’ experience in substation engineering (HV/MV)
- Strong knowledge of primary and/or secondary substation systems
- Experience with Eskom, municipal, or IPP standards (advantageous)
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (Revit or similar tools advantageous)
- Willingness to travel to site when required
Qualifications
- ECSA registration (PrEng / PrTech / PrTechniEng) – advantageous or in progress
