JOB SUMMARY The Maintenance Manager will serve as the site-based GMR 2(7) appointee, holding full operational responsibility for machinery safety and compliance at the designated Material Recovery Facility (MRF). This position requires proven competence under the General Machinery Regulations to ensure the safe control, supervision, and operation of all machinery on site. The role is inherently technical and demands practical expertise in the specific machinery installed at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), including conveyors, balers, hydraulic systems, and rotating equipment. This role requires hands-on capability, with limited administrative focus and sound engineering judgment. While supported by the National GMR 2(1), the site-based GMR 2(7) must be independently capable of ensuring machinery safety at all times, maintaining regulatory compliance, and implementing robust safety standards to safeguard continuous, efficient, and legally compliant operations. RESPONSIBILITIES Machinery and equipment maintenance Monitor the maintenance budget and availability (uptime / downtime) Manage the department in your region Responsible for implementing the national service plan by carrying out 6-monthly services on all machinery and equipment in the region Ensure safety checks are conducted, and all operators are properly trained and certified Capture, update, and maintain all machinery / equipment data on the asset management application Ensure all GMR legal appointments are in place where applicable Diagnose breakdowns and either conduct the repairs, or make use of external contractors if required (in consultation with the Operations Manager) Responsible for the completion of daily, weekly and monthly check lists for all machinery / equipment Advise senior management on productivity data and recommendations for machinery / equipment Responsible for managing the fixed assets Responsible for updating the asset register and asset management application data Ensure that all assets are tagged and captured on the asset management application Ensure that the asset management application is used to monitor the movement of assets Fabrication and manufacturing Refurbish bins by replacing wheels, floors, and sides as necessary and repaint if required Make up new racking, sorting tables, and cages for sites Refurbish racking, sorting tables, and cages as required Building maintenance Perform basic electrical repairs Conduct basic installations such as plumbing, shelving and the like Paint interiors and exteriors Perform other ad hoc maintenance functions as required Site support and improvements Assist with equipment installations for new sites Site improvements as per requests from the Head of Operations COMPETENCIES Identify hazards associated with dangerous machinery Ensure proper guarding of all moving and rotating parts Verify functionality of safety devices and interlocks Enforce and audit lockout isolation procedures Ensure machinery is maintained in a safe working condition Supervise competent persons working on machinery Prevent unauthorized access to dangerous parts Ensure defective machinery is stopped and isolated immediately Maintain inspection and maintenance records as required under GMR Report and escalate material non-compliance to the GMR 2(1) appointee Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Excellent time management and organizational skills Ability to work under pressure, multitask, and effectively set priorities Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy Maintain a high level of confidentiality Ability to adapt to changing work requirements and situations Problem-solving skills and the ability to identify opportunities for process, system and work area improvement Performance-oriented, possess initiative, enthusiasm and self-motivation to make things happen and get things done REQUIREMENTS Trade Tested Artisan, Millwright, Electrician, or Fitter, relevant to the machinery installed at the MRF Minimum 5 years of practical experience in industrial machinery maintenance Proven supervisory experience in machinery operations and maintenance Formal training in machinery risk assessment and lockout isolation procedures Recommended, based on plant complexity National Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is advantageous GCC Factories where the plant risk profile or size triggers a higher level of statutory control is advantageous Proficiency in Microsoft Office is essential Valid drivers license and own reliable transport is preferable Must be well presented, professional, and have excellent communication skills Employment will be implemented in accordance with the Employment Equity Act.
