Job Description

Job Summary / Purpose The Senior CNC Lathe Operator & Setter is responsible for setting, operating, and optimising CNC lathe machines to produce high-precision components according to engineering drawings and quality standards. The role includes advanced setup, tooling selection, program adjustments, mentoring junior operators, and ensuring safe, efficient production. Key Responsibilities CNC Machine Setup & Operation Set up and operate CNC lathe machines efficiently and accurately. Load and edit CNC programs as required. Select, install, and align tooling, holders, and fixtures. Perform first-off inspections and make necessary offsets. Monitor machine performance during production runs. Programming & Adjustments Read and interpret complex engineering drawings and tolerances. Make minor program edits at the machine (feeds, speeds, tool paths). Optimise cycle times without compromising quality or safety. Identify and correct machining errors. Quality Control Measure components using micrometers, verniers, bore gauges, and other precision measuring equipment. Ensure components meet dimensional and surface finish requirements. Record quality checks and report non-conformances. Maintenance & Housekeeping Perform basic machine maintenance and daily inspections. Identify mechanical or tooling issues and report breakdowns. Maintain clean, organised, and safe workstations (5S). Leadership & Support Guide and support junior CNC operators and setters. Assist with training and skills development. Work closely with Toolmakers, Programmers, and Production Supervisors. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. Health, Safety & Compliance Adhere to company safety policies and procedures. Ensure safe use of machines, tools, and measuring equipment. Maintain compliance with quality systems (ISO standards where applicable). Minimum Requirements Trade qualification or relevant CNC machining certification (advantageous). Minimum 58 years experience operating and setting CNC lathes. Strong knowledge of: CNC turning operations Tooling and insert selection Fanuc / Siemens / Haas controls (or similar) Ability to work with tight tolerances. Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and under pressure.
