Job Description

Our client, a well-established and prominent fisheries group, is seeking to employ an experienced General Manager to join their team based in Langebaan, Western Cape.

The General Manager will be responsible for the fishing effort, canned fish and fish meal production as well as related site-based support activities, including engineering and workshop functions with a specific focus on corporate governance and complying with the statutory and legal requirements of a modern business.

That said, as one of the largest fishing companies in South Africa, our client exports fish to markets as far away as Europe and the Americas.

Requirements:

  • Relevant 4-year qualification in Accounting, Engineering, or related field
  • MBA advantageous
  • Minimum 10 years experience within a General Management environment
  • In-depth understanding of the fishing industry and related operational, regulatory, and market dynamics
  • Strong financial and operational management background
  • Proven leadership experience within manufacturing, production, or industrial operations
  • Sound technical and engineering understanding
  • Project Management experience, including international exposure
  • Knowledge of Employment Legislation and organised labour environments
  • Computer literacy (MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally when required

Responsibilities:

Operational and Strategic Management

  • Lead, direct, and manage fishing fleet operations and processing plant activities
  • Drive operational efficiency across canned fish and fish meal production facilities
  • Translate strategic objectives into operational action plans
  • Ensure implementation and achievement of operational and business goals
  • Optimise overall business performance, productivity, and growth

Financial and Commercial Management

  • Manage operating budgets and financial performance
  • Control production costs and optimise utilisation of raw materials and resources
  • Monitor operational effectiveness and profitability
  • Drive cost optimisation and business sustainability initiatives

Leadership and People Management

  • Lead employee relations and workforce development initiatives
  • Drive performance management, staff engagement, and succession planning
  • Manage labour relations within an organised labour environment
  • Promote a high-performance and accountable workplace culture

Compliance, Risk and Governance

  • Ensure compliance with statutory, legal, and corporate governance requirements
  • Lead Health, Safety, and Environmental compliance across the site
  • Ensure adherence to employment legislation and regulatory standards
  • Engage with local authorities and external stakeholders where required

Engineering, Maintenance and Technical Oversight

  • Oversee engineering, workshop, and technical support functions
  • Ensure operational readiness and reliability of equipment and facilities
  • Support continuous improvement and operational optimisation initiatives
