Job Description

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The primary purpose of this post will be to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate lecturing and supervision, research and knowledge production, administration, as well as academic service and community engagement within the discipline of Philosophy, the Department of Philosophy, the Faculty of Humanities and the University at large. The successful candidate will contribute towards the University’s strategy of the Revitalisation of the Humanities through their scholarship, teaching and engagement. This requires an academic who can demonstrably manage all aspects of academic life and be self-driven in their development. The candidate must have the ability to work under pressure, manage large classes, apply themselves as a philosopher in service modules, work in a team, have strong self-management skills and be a team player. We seek a candidate who demonstrates resilience in the increasingly dynamic and complex local and global higher education sector. The ideal candidate is rooted strongly in the discipline and shows potential for breaking new ground in their scholarly/ engagement/ and/ or teaching work.

 

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

The key performance areas for this post are to:

  • Facilitate teaching and learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Philosophy, as per the teaching requirements of the Department
  • Participate in curriculum development and enhancement in collaboration with fellow staff of the Department
  • Supervise postgraduate students
  • Conduct research and publish in peer-reviewed academic journals
  • Undertake academic administration according to the Department’s needs, and perform administrative duties relevant to the portfolio
  • Participate in academic service and community engagement in the university and wider community

CORE COMPETENCIES

Core competencies for this post include:

  • Knowledge of diverse philosophical ideas and practices, with special focus on philosophical ideas and theories pertaining to Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Mind, Epistemology or Metaphysics
  • Demonstrated capacity to contribute creatively to transformative philosophical thinking and practices in Africa.
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate students in Philosophy
  • Ability to conduct and publish peer-reviewed, accredited academic research, as well as present findings at conferences in the discipline of Philosophy
  • Experience in facilitating learning for large classes in the field of Philosophy.
  • Ability to liaise and engage with community organisations to bridge the perceived gap between philosophical theorisation and on-the-ground events and realities

REQUIREMENTS

To be considered for appointment as a Lecturer to this post, candidates must have:

  • A Master’s degree in Philosophy (please note that no other disciplines will be considered). Preference will be given to candidates with a Doctoral degree or studying towards one in Philosophy
  • Strong knowledge of diverse philosophical ideas and practices in general, and a special focus on philosophical ideas and theories pertaining to one or more of the following fields: Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Mind, Epistemology or Metaphysics
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in facilitating learning of a high quality for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies
  • Demonstrable potential to publish own work
  • Some supervision experience would be beneficial
