South Africa: Medical Officer (Doctor – Locum – Wits RHI)

About the Role

The Medical Officer role at Wits RHI – Lejweleputswa (Free State) is a critical position that requires a qualified healthcare professional to provide medical examinations for participants in clinical trials according to study protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct clinical assessments and study visits
  • Review medical history, concomitant medications, and laboratory results
  • Identify, manage, and escalate clinical abnormalities and safety concerns
  • Ensure participants remain medically eligible and safe throughout study participation
  • Perform protocol-required procedures accurately
  • Adhere to approved delegation and scope of practice
  • Maintain up-to-date protocol and GCP training
  • Support audit and inspection readiness
  • Assess adverse events for severity and causality
  • Document and report AEs/SAEs within required timelines
  • Collaborate with investigators and study teams on participant safety management
  • Maintain accurate source documentation
  • Review and verify clinical data captured in CRFs/EDC systems
  • Resolve medical and data queries timeously
  • Ensure documentation complies with ALCOA principles

Requirements

  • MBBCh Degree or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years relevant work experience

Qualifications

  • Certification in International Council for Harmonisation Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP)
  • BLS, ACLS, or Emergency Care Certification
  • Additional training in clinical research methodology or pharmacovigilance
  • Training in HIV, STI, TB, womens health, or infectious diseases research
  • Postgraduate qualification or coursework in Public Health, Clinical Pharmacology, Family Medicine, or related disciplines
