Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the operation, maintenance, and optimisation of all utilities infrastructure, including:
- Boilers (5-ton industrial boiler systems)
- Ammonia refrigeration plants and chillers
- Air compressors, cooling towers, glycol systems, and water plants
- Generators and backup power systems
- Process utilities, including chilled water and steam distribution
- Implement preventative and predictive maintenance strategies to minimise downtime and ensure uninterrupted plant operations.
- Manage utilities performance, including service intervals, compliance records, calibration schedules, and safety documentation.
- Conduct root-cause analysis, 5-Why investigations, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
- Lead and mentor technical teams, ensuring effective daily maintenance planning, task allocation, and shift support.
- Collaborate with production, quality, and safety teams to resolve technical issues and support continuous improvement.
- Oversee utilities-related projects, upgrades, and installation of new equipment.
- Ensure full compliance with statutory and audit requirements for pressure vessels, boilers, burners, ammonia systems, and electrical installations.
- Maintain spare parts, budget controls, contractor management, and adherence to safety procedures.
Qualifications & Experience Required
- Trade Test: Instrumentation Mechanician (essential)
- N2–N4 Electrical/Instrumentational training or equivalent technical qualifications
- 10+ years’ experience in utilities management within manufacturing, FMCG, dairy, beverage, or industrial environments
- Strong experience working with:
- Ammonia refrigeration systems (GEA compressors, ice banks, glycol chillers)
- Industrial boilers and burner control systems
- Air compressors (Kaeser, Airstream, high-pressure and low-pressure systems)
- Water treatment plants and filtration systems
- PLCs, HMIs, VSDs, and instrumentation calibration
- Proven leadership experience in maintenance or technical management roles
- Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure in high-volume production operations
Skills & Competencies
- Advanced fault finding across mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems
- Strong understanding of industrial thermoprocessing equipment and NEC electrical standards
- Ability to interpret and update technical documentation, calibration certificates, and compliance reports
- Hands-on expertise with PLC backups, HMI support, and control system upgrades
- Exceptional planning, analytical thinking, and attention to detail
- Ability to drive continuous improvement, optimise process efficiencies, and reduce downtime
