Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the operation, maintenance, and optimisation of all utilities infrastructure, including:
    • Boilers (5-ton industrial boiler systems)
    • Ammonia refrigeration plants and chillers
    • Air compressors, cooling towers, glycol systems, and water plants
    • Generators and backup power systems
    • Process utilities, including chilled water and steam distribution
  • Implement preventative and predictive maintenance strategies to minimise downtime and ensure uninterrupted plant operations.
  • Manage utilities performance, including service intervals, compliance records, calibration schedules, and safety documentation.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis, 5-Why investigations, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Lead and mentor technical teams, ensuring effective daily maintenance planning, task allocation, and shift support.
  • Collaborate with production, quality, and safety teams to resolve technical issues and support continuous improvement.
  • Oversee utilities-related projects, upgrades, and installation of new equipment.
  • Ensure full compliance with statutory and audit requirements for pressure vessels, boilers, burners, ammonia systems, and electrical installations.
  • Maintain spare parts, budget controls, contractor management, and adherence to safety procedures.

Qualifications & Experience Required

  • Trade Test: Instrumentation Mechanician (essential)
  • N2–N4 Electrical/Instrumentational training or equivalent technical qualifications
  • 10+ years’ experience in utilities management within manufacturing, FMCG, dairy, beverage, or industrial environments
  • Strong experience working with:
    • Ammonia refrigeration systems (GEA compressors, ice banks, glycol chillers)
    • Industrial boilers and burner control systems
    • Air compressors (Kaeser, Airstream, high-pressure and low-pressure systems)
    • Water treatment plants and filtration systems
    • PLCs, HMIs, VSDs, and instrumentation calibration
  • Proven leadership experience in maintenance or technical management roles
  • Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in high-volume production operations

Skills & Competencies

  • Advanced fault finding across mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems
  • Strong understanding of industrial thermoprocessing equipment and NEC electrical standards
  • Ability to interpret and update technical documentation, calibration certificates, and compliance reports
  • Hands-on expertise with PLC backups, HMI support, and control system upgrades
  • Exceptional planning, analytical thinking, and attention to detail
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement, optimise process efficiencies, and reduce downtime
