Cape Town City Centre: Junior Accountant

Job Description

The Junior Accountant will function as a combined accounts receivable and accounts payable specialist. The role focuses on managing invoicing, reconciliations, collections, and supplier payments while driving efficiency through integrated systems including Xero, an inventory management system, and ApprovalMax. This position is ideal for a proactive, hands-on individual who thrives in a small-team environment, enjoys process improvement, and is eager to contribute to a growing business. Key Responsibilities: Manage the full accounts receivable and accounts payable functions, including client invoicing (progress billings, commercial and ad hoc project billing) and supplier invoice processing in line with SCM platform requirements (e.g., Ariba/Coupa). Prepare SLA renewal quotes in collaboration with the relevant account managers and manage client onboarding and registration processes. Perform proactive debtor management, including statements, email and telephonic follow-ups, account reconciliations, and the resolution of discrepancies in collaboration with account managers, production teams, and suppliers. Process supplier invoices and credit card receipts, verify against purchase orders and delivery notes, and manage stock-related invoices integrated from the inventory management system into Xero. Execute supplier payments via EFT or batch processing following ApprovalMax approval and maintain strong vendor relationships. Perform regular debtor and bi-monthly creditor reconciliations, investigate variances, and resolve queries timeously. Support month-end close activities, including the preparation of deferred revenue journals, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations. Maintain accurate, audit-ready financial records in Xero, ensuring SARS compliance, including VAT reporting. Contribute to system and process improvements, including inventory management system and Xero integration troubleshooting. Assist with ad hoc finance tasks and operational support within a lean, fast-paced finance environment. Job Experience and Skills Required: Matric / Grade 12 with a relevant qualification in Accounting or Bookkeeping (Diploma, Certificate, or higher). 35 years experience in accounts receivable and accounts payable roles, preferably within engineering, manufacturing, or project-based environments. Experience with SCM platforms such as Ariba or Coupa is advantageous. Proficiency in Xero, with working knowledge of ApprovalMax and Microsoft Office. Exposure to automation tools for OCR or invoice processing will be beneficial. Strong attention to detail with a high level of accuracy and numerical aptitude. Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with clients and vendors. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a proactive approach to collections and issue resolution. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dual-function role within a lean team environment. About the Role

We are seeking a Junior Accountant to join our team in Cape Town City Centre. As a key member of our finance department, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and adherence to internal controls in our month-end and year-end closing processes. You will also provide budgeting support, monitor cash flow, and process accounts payable and receivable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform month-end and year-end closing processes with accuracy and adherence to internal controls
  • Prepare monthly financial accounts, including bank reconciliations and fixed asset updates
  • Assist in preparing budgets and supporting schedules for management
  • Support monitoring of divisional cash flow and ensure timely payment of suppliers

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Junior Accountant to join our dynamic finance team in Cape Town City Centre. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing the complete Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable process, ensuring accurate and timely financial records, and providing exceptional support to our clients and suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete regular debtor reconciliations and bi-monthly creditor reconciliations, investigate variances, and address queries timeously.
  • Assist with month-end closing procedures, including deferred income journals, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Ensure accurate, audit-ready financial records are maintained in Xero, in compliance with SARS regulations, including VAT returns.
  • Participate in finance system and workflow improvements, including resolving integration issues between the inventory system and Xero.
  • Provide support with ad-hoc finance duties and operational tasks within a streamlined, high-performance finance team.

Requirements

  • Matric / Grade 12 with a relevant Accounting or Bookkeeping qualification (Certificate, Diploma, or higher).

Job Description

About the Role

The Junior Accountant role in our Cape Town City Centre office offers an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team and develop skills in commercial finance. As a key member of our accounts payable and receivable team, you will be responsible for ensuring accurate financial processing, reconciliation, and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Capture and process supplier invoices, ensuring accuracy against purchase orders
  • Reconcile creditor and supplier accounts to statement
  • Ensure timely payments and adherence to AP ageing targets
  • Allocate invoices to correct general ledger accounts and process journals where required
  • Process and reconcile petty cash in line with company policy
  • Issue purchase orders and support procurement administration
  • Perform daily Accounts Receivable functions, including emailing invoices and credit notes
  • Distribute customer statements in line with internal timelines
  • Assist with month-end project closures and revenue-related processes
  • Support debtor activities, including accrued income and WIP reporting
  • Analyse expense accounts to understand cost drivers and variances
  • Build and maintain assigned budget accounts
  • Assist with cash flow and revenue forecasting
  • Prepare reports and schedules to support management decision-making
  • Ensure compliance with internal control procedures and corporate governance standards

Requirements

  • Exposure to Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable processes
  • Solid foundation in accounting principles and reconciliations
  • Eagerness to learn and grow within a commercial finance environment

Qualifications

Completed SAIPA articles or relevant accounting degree
