About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Portfolio Accountant to join our team in Johannesburg North. As a key member of our finance department, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and compliance of our insurance accounting processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Full ownership of insurance accounting for underwriting and insurance portfolios
- Oversight and review of:
- Premium income recognition
- Claims accounting
- Commission accounting (brokers, UMAs, agencies)
- Unearned Premium Provisions (UPR)
- Outstanding Claims Provisions (OCP / IBNR)
- Review actuarial inputs and ensure correct accounting treatment
- Manage and review month-end close processes for insurance portfolios
- Ensure accurate journals, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Assist and support accountants and junior accountants with technical insurance queries
- Act as the escalation point for complex insurance accounting issues
- Liaise with auditors, actuaries, and internal stakeholders
- Ensure strict adherence to insurance regulatory requirements, internal controls, and accounting standards
- Contribute to process improvements and strengthening of financial controls
- Ensure all work is completed accurately, timeously, and in line with compliance requirements
Requirements
- BCom Accounting / Finance or similar relevant degree
- Minimum 5–8 years’ experience in an insurance accounting environment
- Proven experience in:
- Technical insurance accounting (not general management accounting only)
- Reviewing and guiding junior finance staff
- Working with insurance-specific provisions and commission structures
