Job Description

A well-established insurance brokerage is seeking an experienced Senior Underwriter to join their team in Pietermaritzburg. This role is suited to a technically strong underwriter who can assess risk, structure appropriate cover and support the growth and profitability of the portfolio.

Role Overview

The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating and underwriting short-term insurance risks, ensuring compliance with underwriting guidelines and supporting brokers and clients with sound technical advice. This is a senior, hands-on role requiring strong decision-making ability and a solid understanding of the South African insurance environment.

Key Responsibilities

Assess and underwrite new and existing business risks
Determine appropriate terms, conditions and pricing
Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines and regulatory requirements
Provide technical underwriting support to brokers and internal teams
Manage renewals, endorsements and policy amendments
Monitor portfolio performance and identify risk trends
Maintain strong relationships with brokers, insurers and clients
Assist with complex or high-value underwriting cases
Prepare reports and provide insights to management
Support and guide junior underwriting staff where required

Minimum Requirements

Minimum 5+ years experience in short-term insurance underwriting
Strong knowledge of commercial and/or domestic underwriting
Relevant insurance qualification (advantageous)
FAIS compliant (or working towards)
Sound understanding of policy wording, risk assessment and pricing
Strong analytical and decision-making skills
Excellent communication and relationship-building ability
High attention to detail and strong administration skills
Proficient in MS Office and underwriting systems
