CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Department of Computing Sciences (CS) is looking to fill a position of Lecturer within the department with an enthusiastic, forward-thinking person who will contribute to the vision and mission of the Department. The field of Computing Sciences includes Computer Science and Information Systems. There are three key areas of performance that academic staff members in the department need to meet, namely: 1) learning and teaching; 2) engagement and 3) research generally focused within the Department’s research areas (descriptive topics available upon request).

The main purpose of this post is therefore to facilitate and administer the learning process for students in modules presented by the Department at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels specifically in the discipline of Computer Science, to supervise junior Postgraduate students, to be involved in research activities and regularly publish on such research and to contribute to community engagement.

The appointee will be expected to assist in the presentation of some of the undergraduate programming modules.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Learning and Teaching

  • Facilitate learning and teaching for assigned module(s) in accordance with principles of good teaching practice, which includes material development, engaging with students and module administration;
  • Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University learning and teaching forums

Research

• Provide research supervision to honours students;

• Participate in research projects within the Department;

• Generate research outputs for publication in the Department’s research areas;

• Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University research forums.

Engagement

• Participate in or initiate Departmental engagement activities, which could include engagement with schools, industry and other external stakeholders; and

• Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University engagement forums.

CORE COMPETENCIES

 
  • Related and relevant experience in the field of Computer Science.
  • Knowledge of topics in Computer Science such as programming languages (C#, Java, Matlab), with an advanced knowledge of programming data structures.
  • The ability to apply theoretical concepts to practical examples. 
  • Experience in participating in and managing of collaborative team projects.
  • Evidence of the ability to supervise Postgraduate students at Honours level.
  • Evidence of the ability to produce research outputs.
 

REQUIREMENTS

 

• Lecturer

  • A Masters degree in Information Systems or Computer Science,
  • An Honours and undergraduate degree covering Computer Science topics such as programming languages (C#, Java, Matlab), with an advanced knowledge of programming data structures.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ lecturing or related experience.

• The following will be an added advantage:

  • Publication outputs in accredited journals or at discipline conferences.

Note: Shortlisted candidates will be required to demonstrate a sound knowledge of chosen topics in Computer Science by:

  • participating in a pre-interview assessment related to a selected topic in Computer Science.
  • presenting a lecture on a topic of the interview panel’s choosing, followed by topic related questions from a subject expert.
