Maintenance Supervisor

General Manager / Operations Manager / Maintenance Manager
Job Purpose
To oversee and coordinate all maintenance activities within the property, ensuring that buildings, facilities, and equipment are maintained to the highest standards to support guest satisfaction, safety, and operational efficiency.
 
Key Responsibilities

  1. Maintenance Operations
  • Supervise daily maintenance of the property (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, painting)
  • Implement and manage preventative maintenance schedules
  • Conduct routine inspections of buildings, rooms, and equipment
  • Respond promptly to breakdowns and maintenance requests
  • Ensure all repairs are completed efficiently and cost-effectively
  1. Team Leadership & Supervision
  • Lead and manage maintenance staff and artisans
  • Allocate tasks and monitor team performance
  • Train and develop maintenance team members
  • Conduct performance reviews and enforce discipline where necessary
  1. Health, Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with health & safety regulations and standards
  • Conduct safety inspections and risk assessments
  • Maintain fire systems, generators, and emergency equipment
  • Ensure adherence to Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) requirements
  1. Preventative Maintenance & Asset Management
  • Develop and maintain preventative maintenance programs
  • Monitor equipment condition and recommend replacements
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and logs
  • Manage maintenance inventory, tools, and spare parts
  1. Budgeting & Procurement
  • Assist in preparing maintenance budgets
  • Control costs and track maintenance expenditure
  • Source and manage suppliers and contractors
  • Order materials, parts, and equipment as required
  1. Guest & Operational Support
  • Ensure minimal disruption to guests during maintenance work
  • Support departments with maintenance-related needs
  • Maintain high standards of property appearance and functionality
  • Address guest complaints related to maintenance promptly

 
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications

  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Trade Test Qualification (Electrician / Plumber / Carpenter) advantageous
  • Certification in Facilities Management or Engineering (preferred)

Experience

  • 3–5 years’ maintenance experience, preferably in hospitality (hotel, lodge, resort)
  • Previous supervisory or team leadership experience essential

 
Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong technical knowledge (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, general building maintenance)
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance systems and schedules
  • Understanding of South African health & safety regulations
  • Leadership and team management skills
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting ability
  • Good communication and organisational skills

  • Ability to work under pressure and in remote environments (for lodges)
  • Hands-on and proactive approach
  • Strong planning and coordination skills
  • Ability to respond to emergencies quickly

 
Working Conditions

  • May require shift work, weekends, and standby duty

  • Often based on-site (especially in remote lodges or game reserves)
