About the Role

Learn to Earn invites a suitable candidate to apply for the Handyman Skills Trainer position based in Hermanus. The successful applicant will report to the Branch Manager and be responsible for day-to-day training, annual planning, preparation, delivery, administration, and reporting with regard to the LtE Handyman Skills programme.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide training in Handyman Skills including Health and Safety in the workplace, Equipment maintenance and care, Correct and Proper use of various tools and equipment (hand tools and power tools), Basic Woodwork, Electrical, Plumbing, ARC Welding and Building.
• Oversee that the set curriculum for the Handyman Skills course is implemented correctly and that training of a high quality is provided.
• Attend to all administrative aspects of the course including training preparation (course outlines, lesson plans, timeous ordering of materials) and training administration (registration, payment of student fees, assessments, reports, coaching documents and maintenance of the database).
• Liaise with local certified electricians, plumbers, builders and general handymen to keep course material relevant.
• Update training material in consultation with counterparts on other campuses, Branch Managers and Chief Operating Officer on a regular basis.
• Provide stories of interest and life changes related to students to the media desk and fundraising team.
• Liaise with the local community for opportunities to do practical projects and activities relating to the course material as well as for on-the-job training.
• Exercise control over the use and safekeeping of equipment, ensuring all equipment is in good working order and accounted for.
• Ensure safety standards of the Handyman Skills course are in line with those laid down by NOSA (National Occupation and Safety Association) and compliance to the OHS Act or other relevant authority or legislation.
• Participate in staff development from time to time, including in-house training, external training, refresher courses, etc.
• Conduct ongoing maintenance work at all Learn to Earn facilities, including repairs, painting, building, replacing, restoring, professionally and within a reasonable time.
• Conduct seasonal maintenance work (sealing of windows, replacing washers, changing plug switches, oiling of door locks and hinges, etc) methodically and within the specified time.

Requirements

• Hold to LtE’s statement of faith and be an active member of an evangelical church.
• Acts with the highest integrity, honesty, professionalism, and ethics in all matters of work and personal life.
• Be in possession of a relevant diploma in Technical Training (i.e. Woodwork, Plumbing, Electrical, Masonry and/or Welding).
• Possess training and competence to work with and store power tools, industrial machines, work at heights, with substances like cleaning solvents (e.g Spirits of Salts, Acetone, Thinners, etc).
• Relevant Training Diploma would be advantageous, however previous training experience is required.
• Physically fit to do the job and have no physical/health challenges that may be an OHS Risk and hindrance to the physically demanding projects and work.
• Ability to train and translate theoretical concepts into practice.
• Have 3 years’ experience working in a building, artisanal or technical trade environment would be beneficial.
• Passionate about developing the unemployed and eradicating the legacies of injustice.
• High performance orientated, can work independently, have functional proficiency, and initiative.
• Good Computer and administrative skills required.
• Able to interact comfortably and effectively within an inter-cultural environment made up of different social, economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds and be team orientated.
• Good report writing skills and well-developed communication skills in English, while knowledge of isiXhosa/Afrikaans would be beneficial.
• Have a valid driver’s licence (Code EB).

Qualifications

• Formal education/certifications (Bachelor’s, LLB, Matric, etc.) are not required.
