Job Description

Data Lead, Reporting to the CIO Duties & Responsibilities Build a Modern, Scalable Data Platform Lead the design and rollout of our enterprise data architecture (data models, data lake/warehouse, streaming, integration patterns). Modernise data stack to cloud-native, event-driven, API-friendly platforms. Ensure all systems feed clean, structured, reliable data into a unified data environment. Build and maintain high-volume data pipelines that support real-time logistical operations. Drive Data Quality, Governance & Trust Ensure our data is complete, clean, consistent and governed enterprise-wide. Establish data standards, definitions and master data frameworks everyone can follow. Put controls in place to meet POPIA and protect sensitive customer and operational data. Embed monitoring and observability so issues are found early and fixed fast. Turn Data Into Actionable Insights Deliver well-modelled datasets that enable fast decision-making in operations, CX, finance, sales and operations. Make it easy for teams to self-serve insights without relying on analysts for basics. Partner with business teams to understand their challenges and turn those into data products. Lead a High-Performing Data Engineering Team Build a strong team across data engineering, data architecture, and data operations. Implement engineering best practices: CI/CD, code quality, documentation, testing, and automation. Keep the Data Platform Secure, Stable & Cost-Efficient Maintain reliable pipelines, uptime, and data availability. Optimise cloud compute, storage and pipeline costs while improving performance. Manage incidents, drive root-cause analysis, and prevent repeat issues. Ensure data security, access controls, and governance frameworks are followed across the business. Enable Innovation and Future Capabilities Build the foundations for real-time insights that support routing, SLA management, returns, and customer experience. Advise the CIO/CTO and leadership team on data trends, new tech and opportunities to stay ahead. Desired Experience & Qualification 812 years in data engineering and/or data architecture roles Deep experience building large-scale data pipelines and modern data platforms Strong knowledge of cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP), streaming, warehouse/lakehouse patterns Proven track record in data modelling, integration, and real-time data management Experience leading data engineering teams in high-volume operational businesses Commercial mindset understands how data enables revenue, efficiency and customer experience Able to balance short-term delivery with long-term architectural vision Show Up as a Leader Delivers fast Empowers others: Builds capable, independent teams Collaborates well: Works across departments and values input Thinks customer-first: Solves real-world logistical problems Uses data: Backs decisions with facts and analytics Stays humble: Open to learning, improving, and listening
