About the Role

We are seeking a Junior Mechanical Designer to join our team in Cape Town City Centre. As a key member of our design team, you will be responsible for developing detailed 3D parts and assemblies, managing design files, and collaborating with senior designers to bring designs to life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed 3D parts and assemblies using Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks.
  • Create and update technical drawings, including BOMs (Bills of Materials), GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and assembly instructions.
  • Perform basic stress and clearance checks to validate design integrity before prototyping.
  • Manage all design files and version histories within Autodesk Vault or similar PDM (Product Data Management) systems.
  • Maintain strict adherence to file-naming conventions and folder structures to ensure team-wide accessibility.
  • Assist in the transition of “Work-in-Progress” files to “Released” status for manufacturing.
  • Support the senior design team in conducting design reviews and implementing necessary revisions.
  • Collaborate with the workshop or external vendors to troubleshoot manufacturing issues.
  • Participate in hands-on testing and assembly of prototypes to verify design functionality.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design Technology, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (through internships or academic projects) with Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks.
  • Foundational understanding of Autodesk Vault or a similar data management environment.
  • Strong grasp of mechanical principles, materials science, and manufacturing processes (e.g., CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing).
  • Ability to interpret and create technical blueprints and engineering drawings.

Qualifications

  • Formal education in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design Technology, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.

Salary & Benefits

R12,000 – R15,000 per annum, depending on experience.
