About the Role
The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical design of mineral processing equipment and modular plant layouts, working within a multidisciplinary engineering team to deliver projects from concept through to manufacturing and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Design mineral processing equipment and plant components using 3D CAD software
- Develop detailed manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and bills of materials
- Perform engineering calculations including structural, mechanical, and material selection
- Collaborate with process engineers to translate process requirements into mechanical designs
- Support manufacturing teams with technical queries during fabrication
- Conduct design reviews and ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards
- Contribute to the refinement of modular plant design methodologies to reduce costs and project timelines
- Liaise with suppliers regarding bought-out components and specifications
- Assist with site support during construction and commissioning when required
- Maintain accurate project documentation and revision control
Requirements
- B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in mechanical design within heavy industry, mining equipment, or mineral processing
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar)
- Strong understanding of steel fabrication, structural design, and manufacturing processes
- Experience with design codes and standards (SANS, ASME, ISO, etc.)
- Registration with ECSA as a Candidate or Professional Engineer is advantageous
