Job Description

A leading trucking and logistics company operating in household waste removal is looking for an experienced Operations Manager with strong experience in trucking operations, fleet maintenance, and operational logistics to join their team in Midrand. The role involves overseeing and managing trucking operations for household waste removal contracts, ensuring smooth daily operations both externally (field operations) and internally (maintenance and compliance), within a growing operation supporting increased operational demands.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage trucking operations for household waste removal contracts

  • Ensure smooth daily operations both externally (field operations) and internally (maintenance and compliance)

  • Allocate and manage trucks for daily operations

  • Ensure maximum fleet availability at all times

  • Oversee maintenance and servicing of trucks

  • Ensure compliance with safety requirements, operational standards, and applicable legislation

  • Manage operational challenges and resolve issues efficiently

  • Report operational issues and updates to executive management

  • Liaise with clients, contractors, and stakeholders

  • Plan, prioritise, and properly execute operational tasks

  • Manage fleet operations for a sizable fleet, with fewer than forty trucks actively running

Requirements:

  • Degree or Diploma in Waste Management, Operations Management, or Project Management (preferred but not essential)

  • Valid Drivers Licence (essential), preferably Code 10 or Code 14

  • Five to ten years experience in the field (essential)

  • Eight to ten years experience preferred

  • Extensive experience in the trucking industry (essential)

  • Strong mechanical and hydraulic knowledge of trucks

  • Proven experience in fleet maintenance and operational logistics

  • Proven record of managing teams, resources, and operational schedules in waste management services

  • Experience enforcing compliance with safety and operational standards

  • Experience liaising with clients, contractors, and stakeholders

  • Strong leadership and people management skills

  • Ability to build and hold strong teams together and instil discipline

  • Ability to execute operational tasks efficiently

  • Ability to plan, prioritise, and properly execute

  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to report regularly, clearly, and professionally to executives

  • Sound knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations, and standards

  • Ability to work effectively with largely unskilled labour and communicate at an operational level
