About the Role
The Occupational Hygienist/Technologist will play a crucial role in ensuring the health and safety of employees in various industries and mines. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting workplace surveys, assessing environmental situations, and providing recommendations for remedial control methods.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake workplace surveys and evaluate environmental situations in the workplace.
- Assess risks to health arising from various factors such as chemical, biological, noise, ergonomics, radiation, asbestos, thermal stressors, lighting, and ventilation.
- Accurately measure and sample levels of exposure using specialist equipment.
- Record facts or details from the workplace accurately.
- Recommend remedial control methods.
- Compile data, write reports, and present reports for review and approval.
- Maintain equipment and facilities.
- Assist in mentoring and upskilling junior staff by reviewing their reports.
- Demonstrate knowledge of SANS 17020 and related documents.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and own car.
- Registered as an Occupational Hygienist (ROH) or Technologist (ROHT) with SAIOH for 2026.
- Holder of a certificate in Intermediate Mine Environmental Control.
- Valid Legal Knowledge certificate required by the Department of Employment and Labour.
- Embedded knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations, as well as the Mine Health & Safety Act and Regulations.
- Valid SAIOH Ethics Certificate.
- Appropriate experience in occupational hygiene measurement techniques and sampling strategies.
- Experience in performing various occupational hygiene surveys (illumination, noise, ergonomics assessments, ventilation, hazardous chemical agent exposure, vibration etc.).
- Monitoring and measurement experience within different types of industries and mines.
