Job Description

Purpose of the Position
To produce accurate manufacturing drawings, assemblies, flat patterns, and technical documentation for laser cutting, bending, welding, machining, powder coating, and assembly operations. The Draughtsman is responsible for ensuring all drawings are production-ready, cost-effective, and meet customer specifications and quality standards.

Design & Drafting

  • Create detailed manufacturing drawings using CAD software.
  • Generate 2D laser cutting profiles and 3D models.
  • Produce bending, welding, machining, and assembly drawings.
  • Create exploded views and assembly instructions where required.
  • Ensure drawings comply with customer specifications and company standards.
  • Revise and update drawings as required by customers or production.

Production Support

  • Liaise with estimators, programmers, and production departments.
  • Resolve drawing-related issues on the factory floor.
  • Assist with product development and continuous improvement projects.
  • Provide technical support to laser operators, benders, welders, and assembly staff.
  • Ensure all drawings are manufacturable and optimized for production efficiency.

Documentation Control

  • Maintain drawing revision control.
  • Store and organize electronic drawing files.
  • Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Ensure all job files are complete before release to production.
  • Keep customer drawing records up to date.

Cost & Manufacturing Optimization

  • Design components to minimize material waste.
  • Reduce manufacturing time through smart design practices.
  • Standardize components where possible.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure dimensions and tolerances are correct.
  • Verify that drawings comply with relevant standards.
  • Assist Quality Control with technical queries.
  • Participate in root cause analysis of manufacturing issues.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric.
  • Draughting qualification or relevant technical qualification.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in sheet metal fabrication.
  • Experience in laser cutting, bending, welding and assembly environments.
  • Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor or similar).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Good understanding of fabrication processes and tolerances.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in a laser cutting and fabrication environment.
  • Knowledge of SigmaNEST or nesting software.
  • Experience with enclosure manufacturing, sheet metal products, and fabricated assemblies.
  • Understanding of powder coating, machining, and assembly processes.

  • Assist estimators with technical information for quoting.
  • Support production with drawing clarifications and improvements.
  • Develop new products and improve existing designs.
