Job Description

Position Overview An Assistant General Management Couple supports the General Manager in overseeing the full operation of a rural coastal hotel. This hands-on role requires a dynamic couple where one partner typically focuses on Operations & Guest Experience, and the other on Administration, Finance & HR (or both share responsibilities depending on strengths). The couple ensures smooth daily operations, high service standards, financial control, and strong team leadership in a remote hospitality environment. PARTNER 1: Operations & Guest Experience Focus Key Duties & Responsibilities 1. Hotel Operations Management Oversee Front Office, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, and Maintenance departments. Ensure smooth daily operations and service delivery. Act as Duty Manager when required. Maintain 4–5 star service standards. 2. Guest Experience & Relations Welcome and interact with guests. Handle guest complaints and service recovery professionally. Oversee guest feedback platforms (TripAdvisor, Google Reviews, etc.). Ensure memorable guest experiences aligned with the hotel’s brand. 3. Food & Beverage Oversight Supervise restaurant and bar operations. Ensure stock control and cost management. Monitor service standards and hygiene compliance. Work closely with Head Chef on menus and guest preferences. 4. Staff Management Lead and motivate departmental teams. Conduct daily briefings and staff training. Monitor performance and discipline where required. Foster a positive team culture in a rural environment. 5. Maintenance & Property Care Conduct daily property inspections. Report and manage maintenance issues. Ensure facilities and grounds are well maintained. PARTNER 2: Administration, Finance & HR Focus Key Duties & Responsibilities 1. Financial Management Assist with budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting. Monitor daily revenue and expenses. Control stock, procurement, and supplier accounts. Oversee petty cash and banking. 2. HR & People Management Recruitment and onboarding. Maintain staff files and HR compliance. Manage payroll inputs. Ensure compliance with South African labour legislation. Oversee staff accommodation (if provided on-site). 3. Reservations & Revenue Management Manage booking systems and OTA platforms. Implement pricing strategies with GM. Monitor occupancy and yield. Handle group and corporate bookings. 4. Administration Ensure compliance with health & safety regulations. Maintain licenses and regulatory documentation. Prepare monthly operational reports. Liaise with head office (if applicable). Shared Responsibilities Acting General Managers in GM’s absence. Hosting events, weddings, and conferences. Community engagement and local supplier relationships. Marketing support and social media oversight. Crisis management (power outages, water shortages, guest emergencies). Hands-on operational support when short-staffed. Qualifications & Requirements Education Diploma or Degree in Hospitality Management, Hotel Management, Business Management, or related field. Food Safety/HACCP certification (advantageous). First Aid certification (advantageous). Experience 3–5 years in a senior hospitality role (Lodge Manager, Assistant GM, Operations Manager). Experience in rural, remote, or coastal properties preferred. Strong Food & Beverage background (at least one partner). Solid financial administration experience (at least one partner). Skills & Competencies Strong leadership and team management. Excellent guest relations and communication skills. Financial acumen and cost control ability. Problem-solving in remote environments. Ability to work long hours and weekends. High adaptability and resilience. Hands-on and practical mindset. Technical Skills Proficiency in PMS systems (e.g., Opera, Semper, NightsBridge). Microsoft Office (Excel essential). Online booking platforms knowledge. Basic maintenance understanding (advantageous). Personal Attributes Mature, stable couple dynamic. Excellent interpersonal skills. High emotional intelligence. Guest-focused and service-driven. Comfortable living in a rural coastal area. Community-oriented mindset. Working Conditions Live-in position (often with accommodation provided). Long hours during peak season. Weekend and public holiday work required. Remote environment with limited access to urban facilities.

Job Description

The Assistant General Management couple will support the General Managers in overseeing daily operations of a rural coastal hotel. This role requires not only strong hospitality and leadership skills but also the ability to speak and understand the Xhosa language and culture, ensuring respectful and authentic engagement with guests, staff, and the local community. Responsibilities Oversee day-to-day hotel operations, ensuring exceptional guest experiences. Support and inspire department teams to maintain Umngazi’s high service standards. Assist in implementing and maintaining efficient operational procedures. Champion a guest-centric culture across all areas of the property. Manage guest feedback and resolve concerns with professionalism and care. Ensure compliance with financial protocols, labour legislation, and administrative requirements. Work closely with the General Managers to ensure smooth seasonal operations. Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment. Build strong relationships with local suppliers, fishermen, and artisans. Requirements Proven stable work history within the hospitality industry. A complementary couple with strong experience across F&B management, Front Office/Reservations and Housekeeping. South African residency essential. Hotel school qualification advantageous. Minimum 5 years’ senior hotel or resort management experience. Strong all-round understanding of hospitality operations. Demonstrated leadership and team development skills. Solid financial and labour legislation knowledge. Strong administrative and organisational ability. Contactable references from previous employers. Comfortable living and working in a remote coastal location. Working Conditions Flexibility with working hours is essential, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays. Willingness to work extended hours during peak periods and high season when operationally required. Hands-on involvement in the day-to-day running of a busy resort environment. Ability to work respectfully within a close-knit rural community. Comfortable engaging with community stakeholders and participating in relevant community initiatives when required. Assistant General Management Couple Location: Luxury Game Lodge – South Africa Reporting To: General Manager / Lodge Owner Employment Type: Live-in Position (Couple Role) Position Overview A luxury game lodge in South Africa is seeking a dynamic, experienced Assistant General Management Couple to support the General Manager in overseeing daily lodge operations. This role is ideal for a hospitality-driven couple where complementary skills (e.g., Front of House & Operations / Field Guide & Administration / F&B & Maintenance) ensure seamless guest experiences and operational excellence. The couple will act as second-in-command, maintaining 5-star standards, ensuring guest satisfaction, managing staff, and overseeing lodge performance in line with brand standards and conservation values. Key ResponsibilitiesAssistant GM – Partner 1 (Operations / FOH / Admin Focus) Oversee daily lodge operations in the absence of the General Manager Manage Front of House, reservations, and guest relations Ensure exceptional 5-star guest experiences Handle complaints and special requests professionally Assist with budgeting, stock control, and financial reporting Monitor service standards in housekeeping and F&B Staff scheduling, training, and performance management Ensure compliance with South African labour and health & safety regulations Support marketing initiatives and community engagement Assistant GM – Partner 2 (Field / Maintenance / F&B / Guiding Focus – Depending on Skillset) (Specific duties depend on qualifications and lodge needs) Option A – Field Guide / Safari Operations Conduct guided game drives and bush walks (if qualified) Ensure guest safety and environmental compliance Maintain safari vehicles and equipment Share conservation knowledge and lodge sustainability initiatives Option B – Maintenance / Technical Operations Oversee lodge maintenance, infrastructure, and grounds Manage preventative maintenance programs Supervise workshop and maintenance staff Ensure water, solar, generator, and waste systems operate efficiently Option C – F&B / Culinary Oversight Oversee kitchen and bar operations Monitor food quality, hygiene, and stock control Manage supplier relationships Minimum RequirementsFor Both: Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in luxury lodge or 4/5-star hospitality management Strong leadership and staff management skills Excellent guest service orientation Financial acumen and stock control experience Valid driver’s license Computer literacy (MS Office, hospitality systems such as Opera / NightsBridge) South African work eligibility Additional (Role Dependent): Valid FGASA qualification & PDP (if guiding) First Aid certification Hospitality diploma or relevant qualification Maintenance or trade certification (if applicable) Key Competencies Strong communication & interpersonal skills Conflict resolution abilities Problem-solving & decision-making Attention to detail Ability to work under pressure High emotional intelligence Cultural sensitivity Passion for wildlife conservation Working Conditions Live-in position (shared accommodation provided) 6 weeks on / 2 weeks off cycle (depending on lodge policy) Remote bush environment Weekend and public holiday work required Performance Indicators (KPIs) Guest satisfaction scores Staff retention and morale Budget adherence Service quality audits Operational efficiency
