About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Trails Guide to join our team at a luxury safari lodge in South Africa. As a Field Guide, you will be responsible for providing exceptional guest experiences, assisting with administrative tasks, and contributing to the overall success of the Guides and Safari department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow all procedures for maintaining the overall operation of the Guides and Safari department, including individual, family, and children’s safari experiences, safety, excellent guest and staff relations, hosting of guests, and the care of all equipment, vehicles, and assets.
  • Perform all Field Guide functions according to the standards of FGASA and established guiding culture, including guest introductory and safety orientations, guided game drives and interpretive bush walks, tracking, identification of spoor, delivery of informative lectures on relevant ecological topics, and drinks stops and other bush events.
  • Be available for all game drives, back-up drives, and stand-by duties as directed.
  • Practice proficient and safe weapon handling as directed.
  • Contribute to the lodges social media platforms, ensuring consistent delivery of relevant and appealing information with the broader aim of increasing knowledge of the wildlife and operating area.
  • Assist with incident handling in the event of emergency or evacuation, including medical emergencies, fire, and flood.
  • Ensure all available guest information is collected and communicated prior to arrival.
  • Collect guest information while engaging with guests and inform Management so that guest preferences can be recorded and acted upon.
  • Ensure all guest complaints are reported to the Head of Department or Management immediately.

Requirements

  • FGASA Nature Site Guide NQF4 (Level 2) with full Trails Guide qualification
  • Advanced Rifle Handling and Rifle Proficiency
  • First Aid Level 1
  • Valid Drivers License and PrDP
  • Previous experience as a Field Guide at a luxury safari lodge
  • Knowledge of applicable property and company procedures for the department, in line with FGASA standards and best-practice guiding principles

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Trails Guide to join our team at a luxury lodge within the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. The ideal candidate will possess a strong focus on guest safety, conservation ethics, and immersive interpretive guiding while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and hospitality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead guided bush walks and game drives in a Big 5, unfenced wilderness environment.
  • Ensure guest safety at all times, particularly during walking safaris.
  • Deliver engaging, informative interpretations of wildlife behaviour, tracking, ecology, and conservation.
  • Adapt guiding style to suit guest interests, experience levels, and expectations.
  • Create memorable, personalised safari experiences with a strong focus on guest satisfaction.
  • Conduct walking safaris confidently and professionally, demonstrating strong situational awareness.
  • Apply advanced tracking skills and bush knowledge during trails.
  • Maintain calm, decisive leadership in close-proximity wildlife encounters.
  • Act as a role model for ethical wilderness conduct and low-impact tourism.
  • Uphold and promote conservation values and responsible tourism principles.
  • Adhere strictly to reserve rules, safety protocols, and wildlife viewing ethics.
  • Support conservation initiatives, data collection, and environmental awareness where required.
  • Ensure all activities comply with lodge SOPs, reserve regulations, and legal requirements.
  • Maintain clear and professional radio communication at all times.
  • Conduct pre-activity safety briefings and equipment checks.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies or wildlife-related incidents.
  • Care for guiding equipment, firearms (where applicable), radios, and vehicles.
  • Participate in daily briefings, sightings updates, and debriefings.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow guides, trackers, and lodge departments.

Requirements

  • FGASA Professional Field Guide qualification (minimum Level 2).
  • Valid Trails Guide qualification.
  • Valid PDP and drivers licence.
  • First Aid Level 2 (minimum).
  • Proven experience guiding in a Big 5 reserve.
  • Clear criminal record.
  • Strong Big 5 and trails guiding skills.
  • Advanced tracking and bush awareness.
  • Calm, confident decision-making under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling ability.
  • High ethical and conservation-driven mindset.
