About the Role
The University of Cape Town Lung Institute (Pty) Ltd is seeking an experienced Laboratory Manager to join our team in Cape Town. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing laboratory operations, coordinating study recruitment and processing, and ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practise (GCLP) guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Study recruitment and laboratory processing coordination
- Management of laboratory technicians (work assignments, training, proficiency, performance reviews, time sheets, and leave requests)
- Ensure laboratory workflows are completed according to study-sponsor and GCLP guidelines
- Ensure laboratory and technician compliance and proficiency
- Assisting with the development of relevant laboratory/experimental technique SOPs
- Laboratory Maintenance (equipment servicing and calibration, building infrastructure etc.)
- Ordering of reagents and consumables
- CLII Biobank maintenance
- CLII Biobank after hours emergency contact
- Coordination of sample shipments
- Management of sample metadata requests
- Assist with study biosafety and ethics applications
- Laboratory liaison during CRO/CRA study monitoring visits
- Compile and maintain study-specific ISFs
- Study sponsor meetings/communication
- Ensuring good quality Assurance and Quality Control
- Liaising between laboratory and clinical staff. Assisting the data team with laboratory data queries
- Ensuring laboratory safety (OHS, First Aid, Fire Marshall)
- Ensuring appropriate processing of specimens in the laboratories where required
- Assisting senior researchers with molecular biology and sequencing projects
Requirements
- An MSc in immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or cell biology
- At least 2 years experience in laboratory management
- Experience working in a clinical trial environment
- Laboratory experience working with infectious clinical samples
- Research experience in infectious diseases
- Experience with one or more of the following techniques: ELISA, real-time PCR, tNGS, other relevant molecular or immunology techniques, DNA extraction, GeneXpert platform, Line Probe Assays (LPA), drug sensitivity testing, culture techniques
- Computer Literacy (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and Internet; Data Management Systems advantageous)
- Knowledge of medical terminology (especially relating to TB)
- Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practise (GCLP) certification
- Good interpersonal, communication and time management skills

- Formal education/certifications are required for this position.
