About the Role

The University of Cape Town Lung Institute (Pty) Ltd is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Research Nurse to join our team in Khayelitsha. As a key member of our research team, you will be responsible for conducting clinical trials, providing patient care, and contributing to the overall success of our institute.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct informed consent processes and ensure participants are fully informed before enrolment in clinical trials.
  • Provide pregnancy and contraception assessments and counselling, HIV pre- and post-test counselling, adherence counselling and HIV risk-reduction guidance.
  • Perform clinical procedures including vital signs assessments, symptom reviews, specimen collection (urine, blood, vaginal swabs) and administration of study drugs or vaccinations with appropriate monitoring.
  • Document clinical and research data in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) requirements and assist with data entry and query resolution.
  • Perform quality control checks on participant files and study documentation in line with site Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Perform point-of-care testing including pregnancy, urinalysis, HIV, haemoglobin and glucose testing.
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff to process and store samples in accordance with study protocol requirements.
  • Support study and site administration including stock control of consumables and laboratory kits, infection control procedures, and biohazard waste management.
  • Maintain clinic readiness by ensuring consultation rooms are appropriately stocked and emergency equipment is checked according to SOP requirements.
  • Assist with clinic bookings, participant scheduling and maintaining efficient participant flow.
  • Attend required meetings and training sessions and maintain access to electronic study management systems.
  • Communicate effectively with study team members, sponsors and collaborators using various communication platforms.

Requirements

  • Degree / Diploma in General Nursing
  • 2 years’ general nursing experience (post comm serv)
  • Clinical Assessment, Phlebotomy & Vaccination Experience
  • Good Clinical Practice Certification (advantageous)
  • Fluency in English and a second language (Afrikaans and / or isiXhosa)
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organisational and time management skills
