About the Role

The Primary Plant Design Engineer will be responsible for developing and reviewing designs for primary plant systems in substations, ensuring compliance with IEC/SANS standards and project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and review designs for primary plant systems (HV equipment, busbars, disconnectors, earthing, etc.) for substations.
Prepare layout drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
Collaborate with Civil, Secondary, and Protection Engineers to integrate designs.
Conduct site surveys, feasibility studies, and design validation.
Support Project Managers with technical input during tendering and project execution.
Provide technical guidance to Junior Engineers and Drafters.
Liaise with clients, utilities, and suppliers to ensure that the design intent is achieved.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
Minimum 5 years experience in substation primary plant design (HV/MV).
Strong knowledge of HV equipment and substation layout design.
Proficiency in AutoCAD / MicroStation (or similar design tools).
Familiarity with local utility standards and IEC/SANS regulations.
