About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Head of Private Utilities to lead and grow our private utilities division. This is a senior leadership role for an engineering professional with a proven track record in managing complex utility infrastructure projects across electricity, water, or related sectors. You will be responsible for the full operational and commercial performance of the division, driving business growth, and ensuring the highest standards of technical delivery and client service.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the strategic development and operational management of the Private Utilities division, setting clear goals aligned to company growth targets.
- Oversee end-to-end project delivery across private utility infrastructure projects, including electrical reticulation, water supply, and related services.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, developers, municipalities, and key stakeholders in the private utilities sector.
- Drive business development efforts, including tendering, proposal preparation, and contract negotiations to secure new work.
- Manage and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers, project managers, and technical staff, fostering a high-performance culture.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant South African legislation, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor project budgets, cost control, and financial reporting to ensure divisional profitability and sustainability.
- Collaborate with the Executive team on resource planning, capacity management, and divisional strategy.
- Champion health, safety, and environmental compliance across all projects and operations.
- Represent the company at industry forums, conferences, and client engagements.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or any other related qualification
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the engineering services or utilities sector, with at least 5 years in a senior management or leadership role.
- Demonstrated experience managing large-scale private utility infrastructure projects (electricity and/or water).
- Strong knowledge of South African utility regulations.
- Proven track record in business development, tendering, and contract management.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel as required.
Competence & Skills
- Experience working with private developers, estates, industrial parks, or mixed-use developments.
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing divisional P&Ls and budgets.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Track record of team development and building high-performing technical teams.
- Proficiency with project management tools and engineering software platforms.
