Job Description
- Wits RHI is supporting the Department of Health (DOH) in the introduction of a new contraceptive, subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SC) into Public Health Clinics in South Africa
- This is packaged into an easy-to-use kit and can be administered by a healthcare provider or as a self-injection, once women have been trained
- DMPA-SC is one of several contraceptive options and will provided within the context of contraceptive choice and informed-decision-making
- Several Learning Sites have been selected to explore the health system and resource requirements for the future national introduction of DMPA-SC
- To this end, the purpose of the Clinical Mentor is to provide support at select Learning sites with the introduction of DMPA-SC, including:
- The provision of training and mentoring to Nurses and Pharmacists in contraceptive choice and the provision of DMPA-SC, including screening, dispensing, and the administration of DMPA-SC and other contraceptives
- Identify key service delivery points within the clinic to promote access and integration of SRH and HIV services and leverage opportunities for the provision of DMPA-SC, and other contraceptives
- Stakeholder engagement and advocacy in relation to the promotion of contraceptive choice and DMPA-SC at community, facility, and district level, with a focus on supporting the introduction of DMPA-SC as a self-care option
- The provision of training to all healthcare providers; lay community health workers; health promotes, NGO’s and CBO’s in the promotion and support of contraceptive choice and supporting women in the self-administration of DMPA-SC
- Management of other staff at site level

Key performance areas:
- Identify the training needs of DOH clinical, non-clinical staff and other relevant stakeholders – together with the Zenzele team and NDOH
- Arrange appropriate training to meet these needs
- Prepare for training in terms of content and methodologies
- Provide both off site and on the job training to ensure skills transfer and competency
- Ensure all completed registers, assessments and evaluations are collated and submitted to the assigned person in the Zenzele team
- Provide ongoing mentorship and coaching to Nurses and Pharmacists as well as Lay Community Health Workers, Health Promoters, NGOs and CBOs to support the provision of DMPA-SC
- Identify key service delivery points within the clinic to promote access and integration of SRH and HIV services and leverage opportunities for the provision of DMPA-SC, and other contraceptives
- Complete training and mentoring reports including description and analysis of participant assessment and evaluation and share the report with assigned person in the Zenzele team
- Act as the first point of contact for the Zenzele Project, at the allocated Learning Sites
- Collaborate with Facility Managers, Clinic Committees, CBOs and other stakeholders to elicit feedback and provide updates on the project
- Participate in the development and review of tools, job aids and other resources to support staff
- Support the implementation of DMPA-SC, within the package of contraceptive choice at selected facilities
- Ensure clinical services are provided as per DOH policies and guidelines
- Monitor the quality-of-service delivery, and where required, engage in quality improvement activities, together with DOH, to improve quality of care
- Ensure the clinical components of service delivery are recorded, provide oversight for data quality of the Nurses, in compliance with M&E reporting requirements
- Ensure programme data collected is correct and timeously reported to M&E
- Contribute to project reports on the clinical service delivery, as requested
- Participate in monitoring activities mandated by the project management
- Provide support to the following cadres of staff who will be supporting the provision of DMPA-SC:
- Clinical staff (Professional Nurses)
- Non-clinical staff
- Community based Health Workers
- Perform and facilitate performance development and assessments
- Promote harmony, teamwork and sharing of information
- Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
Required minimum education and training:
- BCurr, BNurs, Nursing Diploma, MBChB or equivalent
- Code 10 Valid SA driver’s license
Professional Body Registration:
- HPCSA
- SANC
Required minimum work experience:
- Experience in sexual and reproductive health service provision
- Experience in healthcare provider training, mentoring and support visits
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Prior experience in a research setting
- Experience facilitating stakeholder engagements and engaging community stakeholders
- Sound technical knowledge of SRH service provision, and specifically contraception
- Knowledge of provincial, district and clinic management structures
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management
- Ability to communicate and work with different cadres of personnel management, clinicians; non-clinical and community-based
- Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities such as conferences, workshops etc.
- Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
- Experience working in a donor funded organisation / NGO or project-based environment
- Knowledge of health systems and data management
- Exceptional organisational, administrative and effective communication skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel
- Ordered and systematic in approach to tasks with close attention to detail
- Proactive, able to exercise discretion and independent decision-making
- Able to prioritise own workload and work towards deadlines
- Reside in the area
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Able to speak other South African Languages
- Dispensing licence
- Monitoring and evaluation; data collection and reporting
