Johannesburg: Workshop Manager (Automatic Division)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Workshop Manager to lead our automatic transmission workshop in Johannesburg, ensuring high-quality repairs, efficient operations, and strong team performance while meeting productivity, turnaround time, and customer satisfaction targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Workshop Operations Management: Oversee daily workshop activities, ensuring efficient workflow and job allocation.
  • Monitor turnaround times and ensure jobs are completed within agreed deadlines.
  • Maintain high standards of workmanship on all automatic gearbox repairs.
  • Technical Oversight: Provide expert guidance on automatic transmission diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds.
  • Support technicians with complex fault-finding and technical challenges.
  • Ensure all repairs meet OEM and company quality standards.
  • Team Leadership & Supervision: Lead, mentor, and manage a team of technicians and workshop staff.
  • Monitor productivity, attendance, and performance levels.
  • Conduct training, coaching, and skills development where required.
  • Quality Control: Perform final checks on completed jobs before delivery.
  • Ensure minimal comebacks and maintain high customer satisfaction.
  • Implement continuous improvement processes within the workshop.
  • Customer & Stakeholder Management: Liaise with service advisors and customers regarding job progress and technical queries.
  • Handle escalations and ensure professional resolution of customer concerns.
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Ensure adherence to all health and safety regulations and company policies.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment.
  • Stock & Resource Management: Oversee usage of parts, tools, and equipment.
  • Work closely with parts department to ensure availability of required components.
  • Control wastage and manage workshop costs effectively.
  • Reporting & Performance Management: Track and report on workshop KPIs: Productivity Efficiency Comebacks Turnaround times.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Workshop Manager / Foreman in an automatic transmission or automotive workshop.
  • Strong technical knowledge of automatic gearboxes and diagnostics.
  • Leadership experience managing a team of technicians.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Trade Test (Motor Mechanic / Transmission Specialist) is an advantage, but not required.
