About the Role
The Code 10 Driver will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of medium to heavy waste management vehicles, supporting the collection, transportation, and disposal of waste in accordance with relevant legislation and FMSA operational procedures. The incumbent will also assist with vehicle maintenance and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the waste management service delivery programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Code 10 vehicles including waste collection trucks, tipper trucks, and other assigned fleet vehicles safely and in full compliance with the National Road Traffic Act.
- Transport waste, refuse, recyclable materials, and related loads to designated disposal or processing sites according to approved routes and schedules.
- Assist waste management teams with loading and offloading of waste and equipment where required.
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to confirm roadworthiness and report any defects or faults to the supervisor immediately.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date vehicle logbooks recording all trips, mileage, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities.
- Adhere strictly to waste collection schedules and designated routes to ensure reliable and timely service delivery.
- Collect and deliver official documents, materials, and operational equipment as required.
- Ensure assigned vehicles are clean, well-maintained, and roadworthy at all times.
- Liaise with the fleet supervisor to coordinate scheduled vehicle services, repairs, and licence renewals.
- Comply with all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements applicable to waste management and heavy vehicle operations.
- Maintain confidentiality of all operational information and agency matters at all times.
Requirements
### Education & Licensing
- Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification.
- Valid South African drivers licence Code 10 (mandatory requirement).
- Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) mandatory for transporting waste/dangerous goods; must be current and in good standing.
- Defensive driving certificate will be an added advantage.
- Basic knowledge of OHS regulations applicable to waste management and heavy vehicle operations is advantageous.
Experience
- Minimum of 23 years proven experience operating Code 10 vehicles.
- Experience in a waste management, municipal services, refuse collection, or logistics environment is strongly preferred.
- Clean, verifiable driving record with no major traffic violations or licence endorsements.
- Prior experience in a government or public sector environment will be an advantage.
Knowledge & Skills
- Thorough knowledge of Pretoria and surrounding areas, including major routes, waste disposal sites, and recycling facilities.
- Sound understanding of Code 10 vehicle operation, load securing, and safe driving practices.
- Familiarity with fleet management processes, government transport procedures, and vehicle logbook requirements.
- Working knowledge of waste management operations, refuse collection routes, and environmental compliance requirements.
- Ability to use GPS navigation systems and interpret route maps.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in physically demanding, outdoor operational conditions.
- Willingness to work outside normal office hours, on weekends, or during public holidays when operationally required.
