Pretoria: Senior Design Engineer (Land Systems) Pretoria | Defence & Armoured Vehicle Engineering

An established engineering environment within the defence sector is seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer with a strong background in military and armoured vehicle design . This role is ideal for someone who thrives in technically demanding environments and enjoys leading complex engineering projects from concept through development. You will play a key role in the design and improvement of military vehicle platforms, working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure designs meet demanding operational, safety, and performance requirements. Key Responsibilities Vehicle Design Leadership Lead the design, development, and ongoing improvement of military land systems, including armoured vehicles and related platforms. Engineering Development Apply advanced engineering knowledge to develop and optimise vehicle systems including suspension, drivetrains, armour structures, and electronics integration. Cross-Functional Collaboration Work closely with project engineers, draftsmen, and technical teams to ensure designs align with operational requirements and performance standards. Standards & Compliance Ensure all designs comply with relevant military specifications and defence standards, including MIL-STD and NATO requirements. Technical Problem Solving Address complex engineering challenges in demanding environments while maintaining reliability, safety, and manufacturability. Team Leadership & Mentorship Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and designers, supporting both project delivery and team development. Minimum Requirements Qualifications Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related engineering discipline. Experience 5 10 years of experience in military or armoured vehicle design with a track record of successfully completed engineering projects. Technical Skills Proficiency in CAD software, preferably Autodesk Inventor Strong understanding of military vehicle systems and subsystems Knowledge of suspension systems, powertrains, and cooling packs for military vehicles Understanding of materials and manufacturing processes relevant to heavy vehicle design Knowledge Solid understanding of MIL-STD and NATO defence standards Experience designing systems that meet strict operational and safety requirements Key Competencies Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities Ability to perform under pressure in technically demanding environments Clear technical communication skills Proven leadership and project coordination capabilities Application Professionals with strong experience in military vehicle engineering or land system design are encouraged to apply.
