South Africa: Data Platform Support / Operations Engineer – KZN Durban – up to R415 per hour posted by E-Merge

Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Data Platform Support / Operations Engineer to join our growing data team. This role is critical in ensuring the reliability, stability, and performance of our data platform. You will act as the first line of response for incidents, alerts, and data-related queries, playing a key role in maintaining business continuity and supporting data-driven operations across the organisation.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day operational support for the data platform, ensuring high availability and performance
  • Act as the primary point of contact for support tickets, system alerts, and data-related requests
  • Monitor platform health, proactively identifying and resolving issues before they impact users
  • Investigate and troubleshoot data pipeline failures, performance bottlenecks, and data quality issues
  • Collaborate closely with Data Engineers, Analysts, and DevOps teams to escalate and resolve complex incidents
  • Support and maintain ETL/ELT processes, ensuring data is delivered accurately and on time
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement preventative measures to reduce recurring issues
  • Contribute to incident management, including documentation, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Assist in deploying fixes, patches, and enhancements in line with change management processes
  • Maintain clear and accurate operational documentation, runbooks, and support procedures

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong SQL skills with hands-on experience in Snowflake or similar cloud data platforms.
  • Understanding of ETL/ELT pipelines, scheduling, and monitoring tools.
  • Familiarity with BI/reporting tools and data quality investigation.
  • Experience with ticketing systems (e.g., Jira) and operational support environments.
  • Strong problem-solving, prioritisation, and communication skills.
