South Africa: Senior Lecturer: Applied Technologies

About the Role

The Department of Applied Technologies is seeking a visionary academic to lead the design, development, and delivery of scalable digital literacy and digital capability programmes across the University. The successful candidate will drive a shift towards a comprehensive conception of digital literacy, encompassing information fluency, cybersecurity awareness, artificial intelligence literacy, and critical engagement with digital technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and continuously refine scalable digital literacy curricula, incorporating emerging areas such as AI literacy, cybersecurity awareness, and digital citizenship.
  • Develop and implement technology-enabled teaching, assessment, and administrative processes that support very large student cohorts, including the integration of systems and workflows to improve efficiency and reduce manual processes.
  • Oversee the delivery and quality of digital literacy and higher certificate programmes, including coordination of teaching teams and data-informed improvements, and ensuring alignment with institutional goals, student progression pathways, and evolving digital capability needs.
  • Contribute to institutional research themes by conducting and publishing research, including scholarship related to digital education and large-scale, technology-enabled teaching and learning, and supervise postgraduate students.
  • Work across Faculties to embed digital capability within diverse disciplinary contexts.
  • Participate in projects targeted at community service and engagement.

Requirements

  • Experience or clear potential in designing and delivering technology-enabled teaching and learning at scale.
  • A minimum of three years’ relevant teaching experience at tertiary level.
  • A sustained record of peer-reviewed research output, or clear potential to develop a research profile aligned with the role.
  • Experience in curriculum design and development.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g., Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Digital Education, Educational Technology, or another cognate discipline).
