Duties & Responsibilities

Refractory Installation & Repair:

• Install, repair, and maintain refractory linings in furnaces, kilns, boilers, ovens, and other high-temperature equipment.
• Lay refractory bricks, castable, plastics, and insulation materials according to drawings and specifications.
• Mix, apply, and cure refractory materials to required standards.

Surface Preparation & Demolition:

• Remove damaged or worn refractory linings safely and efficiently.
• Prepare surfaces by cleaning, chipping, and breaking out old material to ensure proper adhesion.

Inspection & Quality Control:

• Inspect refractory installations for defects, cracks, or wear.
• Ensure work meets quality standards, tolerances, and manufacturer specifications.

Safety Compliance:

• Adhere strictly to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and site-specific safety regulations.
• Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection when required.
• Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and safety briefings.

Equipment & Tool Handling:

• Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and equipment used in refractory work.
• Ensure tools and materials are used correctly and stored safely.

Teamwork & Communication:

• Work closely with supervisors, engineers, and other trades to complete work efficiently.
• Follow work instructions accurately and report hazards or defects immediately.

Experience & Qualification

• National Senior Certificate (Matric).
• Refractory Mason Red Seal Certification.
• Minimum 1-3 years’ experience as a Refractory Mason in a Metal, Foundry, or Engineering environment.
• Forklift and Overhead Crane Operations advantageous.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
• Sasol or heavy industrial site experience will be an advantage.
• Must be a local candidate
