A leading modular infrastructure and manufacturing company is looking for an experienced Technical Designer with strong experience in product development, mechanical design, fabrication processes, structural systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, and engineering design to join their team in Cape Town, WC. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing innovative products and assemblies from concept through to production, ensuring functionality, manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with relevant standards. This role requires a hands-on designer capable of creating complete engineered systems and converting concepts into production-ready solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop new products, assemblies, and components from concept through to production release.
  • Create and engineer complete mechanical, structural, plumbing, electrical, and modular systems suitable for manufacturing and field operation.
  • Generate innovative design solutions to meet customer requirements, operational needs, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Conduct product research, benchmarking, and concept development for new and existing product lines.
  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Perform design calculations, material selection, component specification, and engineering evaluations.
  • Evaluate design feasibility, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost implications throughout the development process.
  • Identify and resolve technical design challenges during development and production.
  • Collaborate with Production, Sales, Procurement, and Management teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Revise and improve existing products based on production feedback, field performance, customer requirements, and cost reduction opportunities.
  • Maintain engineering documentation, revision control, and drawing management systems.
  • Prepare cost estimates for new product designs and compare estimated versus actual project costs upon completion.
  • Provide technical support to production, sales, and manufacturing teams.
  • Conduct site measurements and technical investigations where required.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable standards, regulations, and company requirements.
  • Perform any other duties related to the position.

Requirements:

  • Relevant technical qualification in Industrial Design, Mechanical Draughting, Product Design, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a product design, technical design, mechanical design, or engineering design environment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing original products, assemblies, or systems rather than solely producing drawings from existing designs.
  • Strong understanding of steel fabrication, structural design, plumbing systems, 12V electrical systems, solar installations, and mechanical components.
  • Ability to create complete parametric 3D models and assemblies from concept stage.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and engineering thinking abilities.
  • Experience evaluating manufacturability, material selection, and production processes.
  • Proficiency in Afrikaans and English (verbal and written).
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Excel.
  • Own reliable transport.
  • Experience within mobile sanitation, trailer manufacturing, modular construction, or similar industries will be advantageous.
  • Practical fabrication, manufacturing, or workshop experience will be advantageous.
  • Experience with product testing, prototyping, and new product introduction will be advantageous.
  • Exposure to Industrial Engineering or Mechanical Engineering principles will be advantageous.
