Job Description
This role supports business development and project delivery by analysing tender documents, assessing technical requirements, and pricing materials, labour, and subcontractor inputs in line with South African standards and market conditions.
The estimator plays a critical role in securing profitable projects while ensuring compliance with engineering specifications, client requirements, and applicable regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Tendering & Estimation
- Analyse tender documents, specifications, drawings, and BOQs (Bills of Quantities)
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for:
- HVAC systems (chilled water, VRF/VRV, ventilation, ducting, extraction systems)
- Industrial process ventilation and cooling systems
- Perform quantity take-offs from drawings and models (manual and software-based)
- Compile complete and accurate tender submissions within deadlines
- Develop pricing strategies aligned with company margins and market competitiveness
- Cost Analysis & Pricing
- Source and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations
- Build up costs for:
- Materials (ducting, piping, insulation, equipment)
- Labour (installation teams, specialists)
- Plant and equipment
- Consider site-specific factors such as:
- Remote locations (common in mining/industrial SA projects)
- Labour availability and productivity
- Safety and compliance requirements
- Maintain and update cost databases and historical pricing records
- Technical Evaluation
- Interpret HVAC system designs and engineering drawings
- Identify risks, discrepancies, and value engineering opportunities
- Propose cost-saving alternatives without compromising performance or compliance
- Liaise with design engineers to clarify scope and technical requirements
- Commercial & Contractual Support
- Assist in preparing:
- Tender clarifications
- Commercial submissions
- Contract documentation
- Evaluate contract conditions (e.g., JBCC, NEC, FIDIC)
- Identify commercial risks and mitigation strategies
- Support handover to project execution teams after award
- Compliance & Standards
- Ensure all estimates align with:
- South African National Standards (SANS)
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
- Environmental and energy efficiency requirements
- Incorporate compliance costs into estimates (e.g., safety, permits, QA/QC)
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with:
- Clients and consultants
- Suppliers and subcontractors
- Internal engineering and project teams
- Attend site visits, tender briefings, and clarification meetings when required
Key Skills & Competencies:
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of industrial HVAC systems and components
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and P&IDs
- Proficiency in estimation software and tools (e.g., Excel, CCS, CostX, or similar)
- Knowledge of South African construction and engineering practices
Analytical Skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong numerical and cost analysis capabilities
- Ability to assess risk and identify cost drivers
Communication Skills
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Ability to compile professional tender documents
- Effective coordination with multidisciplinary teams
Commercial Awareness
- Understanding of project costing, margins, and profitability
- Awareness of market trends and pricing fluctuations in South Africa
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum Requirements
- National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
- 3–7 years’ experience in mechanical/HVAC estimation (industrial environment preferred)
Preferred
- Experience in mining, manufacturing, or large industrial projects
- Knowledge of contract forms (NEC, FIDIC, JBCC)
- Professional registration (e.g., ECSA candidate/registered) is advantageous
