Job Description
The Cross-Border Fleet Manager will take full responsibility for the performance, compliance, safety, utilisation, and profitability of a cross-border fleet operating across the SADC region. This role requires a highly experienced operational leader with strong knowledge of transport corridors, border processes, fleet cost control, and driver management.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Operations Management
- Oversee daily performance and operational readiness of the cross-border fleet
- Ensure maximum fleet utilisation, productivity, and efficiency
- Manage route planning, scheduling, load execution, and delivery performance
- Monitor operational and financial performance against targets
- Implement initiatives to optimise fleet performance and reduce downtime
- Ensure safe, efficient, and customer-focused transport execution
Cross-Border Operations
- Manage transport operations across key SADC corridors
- Monitor border performance, transit times, and route challenges
- Ensure all permits, licences, and regulatory requirements are in place
- Collaborate with internal teams to minimise delays and improve efficiency
- Identify operational bottlenecks and implement corrective actions
- Ensure full compliance with customs, transport, and regulatory frameworks
Driver & Team Management
- Lead and manage drivers, fleet coordinators, and operational staff
- Monitor driver performance, behaviour, and compliance
- Promote a strong safety and accountability culture
- Conduct performance management, coaching, and disciplinary processes
- Ensure adherence to company procedures and safety standards
Fleet Maintenance & Asset Management
- Oversee preventative maintenance and servicing schedules
- Monitor breakdowns, downtime, and maintenance costs
- Coordinate with service providers to ensure vehicle availability
- Ensure all fleet assets meet safety and compliance standards
- Support fleet planning and asset replacement strategies
Cost Control & Profitability
- Monitor fuel consumption, route costs, and operational expenses
- Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising service delivery
- Track profitability by vehicle, route, and corridor
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance reviews
- Ensure fleet operations contribute positively to overall profitability
Compliance, Safety & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with transport legislation and internal policies
- Monitor licences, permits, insurance, and regulatory documentation
- Promote health, safety, and environmental standards
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and service failures
- Support internal and external audits
Customer & Stakeholder Management
- Ensure service delivery meets customer expectations and SLAs
- Work closely with commercial and customer service teams
- Provide operational reporting and performance feedback
- Support business growth through reliable and cost-effective operations
Requirements
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in cross-border transport operations
- Minimum 5 years in a senior fleet management role
- Strong knowledge of SADC corridors, border processes, and route planning
- Proven experience managing drivers, fleet operations, and service providers
- Strong understanding of transport legislation, compliance, and safety standards
- Strong financial acumen with experience in cost control and profitability
- Excellent leadership, planning, and problem-solving skills
- Valid driver’s licence
Desirable Experience
- Experience operating across Southern Africa cross-border environments
- Background in logistics, transport, or supply chain operations
- Exposure to fleet management systems, telematics, and optimisation tools
- Experience supporting sectors such as mining, FMCG, manufacturing, retail, or agriculture
