About the Role
A leading insurance underwriting manager is seeking a Junior Data Scientist to join their analytics team in Johannesburg. This high-impact, developmental role requires a technically skilled individual to work closely with senior management and underwriting teams, supporting pricing, product development, and operational decision-making by building tools and uncovering insights.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse claims, premium, and policy data to identify key trends and opportunities.
- Build and maintain data pipelines to ensure the accuracy of datasets.
- Assist in developing and maintaining pricing models for insurance products. Monitor portfolio performance and identify risk areas.
- Develop scripts and tools (e.g., in Python, SQL, Json) to automate and streamline data processing. Help maintain and enhance internal analytics and reporting infrastructure.
- Simplify complex findings and present them clearly to a non-technical audience.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree with excellent marks in a quantitative field (e.g., Data Science, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Computer Science, Accounting, Engineering).
- Approximately 2 years’ experience in a data analysis, actuarial, or business intelligence role.
- Strong programming skills (Python) and SQL for data extraction.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups).
- Exposure to data visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI).
